The increase in demand for electric power and the insertion of a distributed generation led to the rise of the short-circuit current in substations. Most of these Brazilian substations were designed decades ago, because of that their equipment may not support the new short-circuit current levels. To protect the installed equipment and avoid excessive costs replacing old devices, it is possible to install Fault Current Limiters (FCLs). This document is a report from an R&D project that evaluated FCL topologies considering real parameters in simulation from used equipment, concluding that the selected FCL topologies accomplished their technical objective. However, before implementing these topologies in the distribution system, one should consider the technical and economic feasibility of using semiconductor switching devices.

Nowadays, the complexity of electrical power systems is increasing. Consequently, the occurrence and the amplitude of the fault current are rising. This fault currents harm the substations’ electrical equipment. Besides, the growth in the fault current level is forcing the change of the circuit breakers to others with a higher interruption capability. A proposal to solve this problem is the fault current limiter (FCL). This equipment has low impedance in the normal operation and high impedance in a short circuit moment. Superconductors are an advantageous choice of material in this case, because of their properties. In order to simulate this equipment, the 2-D Finite Element Method (FEM) has been used. In this paper, a novel FEM simulation analysis of the saturated core Superconductor Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) is proposed using the A-V-H formulation. The current distribution in the superconducting coil is observed. The results are compared to the limited fault current measurements and simulations available in the literature.

This paper presents the results of thermal modeling of a unique 69 kV 3000A Solid State Fault Current Limiter (SSFCL) developed by Silicon Power of Malvern, PA with support of EPRI. The development of the Solid State Fault Current Limiter is expected to modernize power distribution systems through the use of small-scale solid-state power devices. The use of this new design is expected to increase reliability and functionality while reducing footprint. However, as the footprint is reduced, the heat flux for the system is increased, leading to the significant possibility of device failure due to thermal excursions if the heat load is not properly managed. The high heat loading requires the use of aggressive thermal management in the form of liquid cooling of the electronics. This system features 288 kW of waste heat in the three phase system. The system is submerged in FR3 dielectric coolant and the desired thermal management system is liquid natural convection within the tank and shed to the ambient through an external finned array system. This project explores the feasibility of this system design.

As one of the most applicable to high-voltage network superconducting fault current limiterSCFCL(saturated core superconducting fault current limiter) ,which use of core saturation properties can be achieved the current-limiting function without delay ,will be the most widely applied in the future,By analyzing the working principle of SCFCL,this paper use of PSCAD and finite element analysis software Ansoft to build the 500kV\/3150A grade SCFCL model and accurate calculation coil self-inductance and mutual inductance, the harmonic of each size and analyzed its Impedance characteristic on the different external parameters,The results show that SCFCL has a excellent performance for high voltage power network short-circuit current limitation, and provides important reference for design.

Nowadays, with consecutive development of the power system, not only the scale of the grid is expanded but also many technical problems exist. One of the most important problems is the exceeding short circuit current in the power grid, this value exceeds out of the regulation’s range as well as breaking capacity of the protection devices. In this paper, a fault current limiter (FCL) device is introduced as a solution; it works as a high impedance in short circuit cases and low impedance in normally case. This paper simulates the fault current limiter transformer type in MATLAB/SIMULINK, the effect of FCLT’s parameters to short circuit reduction is given in the results. Application of FCLT in reality network also is presented with markable results of short circuit reduction in Ho Chi Minh Power Corporation‘s distribution system.
