Pedigree drawing is of special importance for genetic counseling and research on documenting families with inherited disease. Current pedigree-drawing tools fall into two types: those build pedigree diagrams from input family data, and those provide a graphical interface to draw pedigree directly. Here we merge the two types of programs into one, and release a brand new pedigree-drawing web server, PedigreeOnline. Through introducing a novel pedigree-like-layout (PLL) family data format and taking advantage of HTML5 canvas element in development, this program is able to build two-way interactive connections between family data and graphical interface. Users can work on and switch easily between the graphical interface and the family data window. Currently this web server is compatible with Linkage data format and comma-separated value (CSV) data format. These features make PedigreeOnline a pedigree-drawing tool with outstanding user-friendliness and flexibility. Human attachment describes the establishment of contact between two or more people leading to a closer interpersonal relationship. For measuring attachment, the use of nonverbal assessments tools including art and drawing tasks has been shown to be an alternative to conventional assessment approaches. The present study aims at evaluating the internal criterion validity of a new digital drawing tool for measuring interpersonal attachment. 68 participants took part in this pilot study and were separated in groups of two. After completion of a 10-item subscale of Social Orientation (SO) they were asked to sit opposite to the other and to hold eye contact during a three minute drawing period. Moving the pen to the upper section near the partner stood for thoughts about the other, while moving to the lower section closest to the subject implicated thoughts about oneself. The mean distance of the resulting time series of the two subjects were calculated, using the mean Euclidean distance, and compared with the difference in the SO values via linear regression. Taking all differences together a moderate correlation of r = 0.298 was observed, which however slightly missed the level of significance (p = 0.09). We were able to find small evidence for the criterion validity of IU digital drawing tool. For future studies, other measures of similarity in the time series, i.e. the Manhattan Distance are discussed as an extension to foster the present results.

Abstract Background Pedigree files are ubiquitously used within bioinformatics and genetics studies to convey critical information about relatedness, sex and affected status of study samples. While the text based format of ped files is efficient for computational methods, it is not immediately intuitive to a bioinformatician or geneticist trying to understand family structures, many of which encode the affected status of individuals across multiple generations. The visualization of pedigrees into connected nodes with descriptive shapes and shading provides a far more interpretable format to recognize visual patterns and intuit family structures. Despite these advantages of a visual pedigree, it remains difficult to quickly and accurately visualize a pedigree given a pedigree text file. Results Here we describe ped_draw a command line and web tool as a simple and easy solution to pedigree visualization. Ped_draw is capable of drawing complex multi-generational pedigrees and conforms to the accepted standards for depicting pedigrees visually. The command line tool can be used as a simple one liner command, utilizing graphviz to generate an image file. The web tool, https://peddraw.github.io, allows the user to either: paste a pedigree file, type to construct a pedigree file in the text box or upload a pedigree file. Users can save the generated image file in various formats. Conclusions We believe ped_draw is a useful pedigree drawing tool that improves on current methods due to its ease of use and approachability. Ped_draw allows users with various levels of expertise to quickly and easily visualize pedigrees.
