Abstract Non-mechanical ptychographic encoding (NPE) transforms the secret information into a series of diffractive patterns through a spatial light modulator, saving the need to fabricate the secret objects. Conventionally, the shares in extended visual cryptography (EVC) are printed on transparent sheets or fabricated with diffractive optical elements and metasurface, but these methods are expensive and disposable. To solve these problems, we proposed an optical image encryption scheme that combines EVC and NPE. In the encryption process, the secret image is decomposed into multiple shares that are digitally loaded on the spatial light modulator, and the ciphertexts are generated according to the ptychographic encoding scheme. The decryption is performed by superimposing the shares reconstructed from the ciphertexts. We present optical experiments to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Images contain very sensitive and confidential information. Because images play a significant role in many applications such as military communication, remote-sensing, and medical-imaging, therefore, it is necessary to protect sensitive and confidential information from unauthorized use and modification. To achieve this objective, encryption is one of the best methods among the information hiding methods. In recent years, many image encryption approaches are designed by the researchers. They use different concepts for image encryption to increase security. The main aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of the existing image encryption approaches. These approaches are categorized based on different concepts such as chaotic maps, DNA, compressive sensing, and optical image encryption. Comparisons are made among the existing approaches to access the various security parameters. Key performance metrics are also presented. The future scope of image encryption is also presented to encourage the research community.

A new asymmetric optical double image encryption algorithm is proposed, which combines phase truncation and singular value decomposition. The plain text is encrypted with two-stage phase keys to obtain a uniformly distributed cipher text and two new decryption keys. These keys are generated during the encryption process and are different from encryption keys. It realizes asymmetric encryption and improves the security of the system. The unscrambling keys in the encryption operation are mainly related to plain text. At the same time, the system is more resistant to selective plain text attacks; it also improves the sensitivity of decryption keys. With the application of phase truncation, the key space expanded and the security of the cryptographic system is enhanced. The efficacy of the system is calculated by evaluating the estimated error between the input and retrieved images. The proposed technique provides innumerable security keys and is robust against various potential attacks. Numerical simulations verify the effectiveness and security of the proposed technique.
