Preface and Introduction

We are grateful to present this special issue of Monthly Review, carrying forward a tradition established six decades ago. The stance of the magazine reflects Castro’s assertion that criticism should be from within the revolution, mirroring the view of C. Wright Mills. In his Listen, Yankee, Mills wrote that we don’t worry about the Cuban Revolution, we worry with it. This volume is put together in that spirit.

buy this issue This number of Monthly Review is a special issue guest edited by Manolo De Los Santos and Vijay Prashad on The Cuban Revolution Today: Experiments in the Grip of Challenges. Although it covers the major internal struggles of the ongoing Cuban Revolution, along with the external attacks on it by Washington, one unaddressed area of critical importance, which deserves mention, is Cuba’s world leadership in sustainable human development.

Imperialismo Tardio

O presente artigo versa por apresentar parte do debate, durante a década de 2010, entre economistas e cientistas sociais marxistas sobre o imperialismo contemporâneo. Concentramos-nos nas contribuições de intelectuais colaboradores da revista Monthly Review, como Samir Amin, Prabhat Patnaik, Utsa Patnaik, John Smith e Intan Suwandi e suas formulações acerca do tardo-imperialismo, isto é, a fase madura e o ápice da dominação imperialista na economia mundial. Esses autores se propõem a atualizar a teoria do imperialismo através de novas pesquisas e categorias teóricas com níveis de abstração distintos como a arbitragem global do trabalho, mundialização da lei do valor, deflação da renda nos países periféricos, cadeias globais de valor-trabalho, etc. Ao fim apresentamos, em linhas gerais, as polêmicas desses autores com o geógrafo David Harvey a cerca da atualidade do imperialismo como categoria teórica.

Cuba and the United States

This exchange appeared in the September 1961 issue of Monthly Review. The questions were submitted, in writing, to Comandante Guevara by Leo Huberman during the week of the Bay of Pigs invasion; the answers were received at the end of June.
