AbstractLet $$(S,{\mathcal {L}})$$ ( S , L ) be a smooth, irreducible, projective, complex surface, polarized by a very ample line bundle $${\mathcal {L}}$$ L of degree $$d > 25$$ d > 25 . In this paper we prove that $$\chi (\mathcal O_S)\ge -\frac{1}{8}d(d-6)$$ χ ( O S ) ≥ - 1 8 d ( d - 6 ) . The bound is sharp, and $$\chi ({\mathcal {O}}_S)=-\frac{1}{8}d(d-6)$$ χ ( O S ) = - 1 8 d ( d - 6 ) if and only if d is even, the linear system $$|H^0(S,{\mathcal {L}})|$$ | H 0 ( S , L ) | embeds S in a smooth rational normal scroll $$T\subset {\mathbb {P}}^5$$ T ⊂ P 5 of dimension 3, and here, as a divisor, S is linearly equivalent to $$\frac{d}{2}Q$$ d 2 Q , where Q is a quadric on T. Moreover, this is equivalent to the fact that a general hyperplane section $$H\in |H^0(S,{\mathcal {L}})|$$ H ∈ | H 0 ( S , L ) | of S is the projection of a curve C contained in the Veronese surface $$V\subseteq {\mathbb {P}}^5$$ V ⊆ P 5 , from a point $$x\in V\backslash C$$ x ∈ V \ C .

Abstract We prove that the only rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number 1 of the exceptional algebraic groups admitting irreducible equivariant Ulrich vector bundles are the Cayley plane E 6/P 1 and the E 7-adjoint variety E 7/P 1. From this result,we see that a general hyperplane section F 4/P 4 of the Cayley plane also has an equivariant but non-irreducible Ulrich bundle.

We study the geometry of quintic threefolds [Formula: see text] with only ordinary triple points as singularities. In particular, we show that if a quintic threefold [Formula: see text] has a reducible hyperplane section then [Formula: see text] has at most [Formula: see text] ordinary triple points, and that this bound is sharp. We construct various examples of quintic threefolds with triple points and discuss their defect.

Abstract Given $n$ general points $p_1, p_2, \ldots , p_n \in{\mathbb{P}}^r$ it is natural to ask whether there is a curve of given degree $d$ and genus $g$ passing through them; by counting dimensions a natural conjecture is that such a curve exists if and only if \begin{equation*}n \leq \left\lfloor \frac{(r + 1)d - (r - 3)(g - 1)}{r - 1}\right\rfloor.\end{equation*}The case of curves with nonspecial hyperplane section was recently studied in [2], where the above conjecture was shown to hold with exactly three exceptions. In this paper, we prove a “bounded-error analog” for special linear series on general curves; more precisely we show that existence of such a curve subject to the stronger inequality \begin{equation*}n \leq \left\lfloor \frac{(r + 1)d - (r - 3)(g - 1)}{r - 1}\right\rfloor - 3.\end{equation*}Note that the $-3$ cannot be replaced with $-2$ without introducing exceptions (as a canonical curve in ${\mathbb{P}}^3$ can only pass through nine general points, while a naive dimension count predicts twelve). We also use the same technique to prove that the twist of the normal bundle $N_C(-1)$ satisfies interpolation for curves whose degree is sufficiently large relative to their genus, and deduce from this that the number of general points contained in the hyperplane section of a general curve is at least \begin{equation*}\min\left(d, \frac{(r - 1)^2 d - (r - 2)^2 g - (2r^2 - 5r + 12)}{(r - 2)^2}\right).\end{equation*} As explained in [7], these results play a key role in the author’s proof of the maximal rank conjecture [9].

Abstract Severi varieties and Brill–Noether theory of curves on K3 surfaces are well understood. Yet, quite little is known for curves on abelian surfaces. Given a general abelian surface S with polarization L of type {(1,n)} , we prove nonemptiness and regularity of the Severi variety parametrizing δ-nodal curves in the linear system {|L|} for {0\leq\delta\leq n-1=p-2} (here p is the arithmetic genus of any curve in {|L|} ). We also show that a general genus g curve having as nodal model a hyperplane section of some {(1,n)} -polarized abelian surface admits only finitely many such models up to translation; moreover, any such model lies on finitely many {(1,n)} -polarized abelian surfaces. Under certain assumptions, a conjecture of Dedieu and Sernesi is proved concerning the possibility of deforming a genus g curve in S equigenerically to a nodal curve. The rest of the paper deals with the Brill–Noether theory of curves in {|L|} . It turns out that a general curve in {|L|} is Brill–Noether general. However, as soon as the Brill–Noether number is negative and some other inequalities are satisfied, the locus {|L|^{r}_{d}} of smooth curves in {|L|} possessing a {g^{r}_{d}} is nonempty and has a component of the expected dimension. As an application, we obtain the existence of a component of the Brill–Noether locus {{\mathcal{M}}^{r}_{p,d}} having the expected codimension in the moduli space of curves {{\mathcal{M}}_{p}} . For {r=1} , the results are generalized to nodal curves.

In this paper, we study the singularities of a general hyperplane section $H$ of a three-dimensional quasi-projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that if $X$ has only canonical singularities, then $H$ has only rational double points. We also prove, under the assumption that $p>5$, that if $X$ has only klt singularities, then so does $H$.

We study the essentially isolated determinantal singularities (EIDS), defined by Ebeling and Gusein-Zade [S. M. Guseĭn-Zade and W. Èbeling, On the indices of 1-forms on determinantal singularities, Tr. Mat. Inst. Steklova 267 (2009) 119–131], as a generalization of isolated singularity. We prove in dimension [Formula: see text], a minimality theorem for the Milnor number of a generic hyperplane section of an EIDS, generalizing the previous results by Snoussi in dimension [Formula: see text]. We define strongly generic hyperplane sections of an EIDS and show that they are still EIDS. Using strongly general hyperplanes, we extend a result of Lê concerning the constancy of the Milnor number.

Let $I$ and $J$ be homogeneous ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring. We study upper bounds of the Hilbert function of the intersection of $I$ and $g(J)$, where $g$ is a general change of coordinates. Our main result gives a generalization of Green’s hyperplane section theorem.

AbstractWe study here the relative cohomology and the Gauss-Manin connections associated to an isolated singularity of a function on a manifold with boundary, i.e. with a fixed hyperplane section. We prove several relative analogs of classical theorems obtained mainly by E. Brieskorn and B. Malgrange, concerning the properties of the Gauss-Manin connection as well as its relations with the Picard-Lefschetz monodromy and the asymptotics of integrals of holomorphic forms along the vanishing cycles. Finally, we give an application in isochore deformation theory, i.e. the deformation theory of boundary singularities with respect to a volume form. In particular, we prove the relative analog of J. Vey's isochore Morse lemma, J .-P. Fran~oise's generalisation on the local normal forms of volume forms with respect to the boundary singularity-preserving diffeomorphisms, as well as M. D. Garay's theorem on the isochore version of Mather's versa! unfolding theorem.
