We appreciate Dr Fenster's letter, especially since it underscores issues raised by the possibility of having human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-infected children in day care centers. There are three issues raised by the letter: (1) the question of parent rights; (2) the role of physicians and public health institutions to assess health risks posed by individuals for the population as a whole; and (3) the content of the educational message that should be provided
