ABSTRACT In the paper by Y. Kassir and G. Simchen (Genetics 109: 481-492; March 1985) entitled "Mutations leading to expression of the cryptic HMR  a locus in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae," the authors wish to correct the following gene designation: SIR5 should be replaced by SIR4, and sir5 by sir4. The tester strain 2009 and its progenitor J584 were found in further tests to carry a mutation allelic to sir4oc, thus confirming that these strains carry sir4 mutations, as originally designated by Rine (1979). These changes in gene designation do not alter the discussion and conclusions outlined in our paper.
