Abstract In [ 3] we considered energy minimization of pair potentials among periodic sets of a fixed-point density. For a large class of potentials we presented sufficient conditions for a point lattice to give a local optimum among periodic sets. We hereby, in particular, derived a local version of Cohn and Kumar’s conjecture [ 1, Conjecture 9.4] by which the hexagonal lattice $\textsf{A}_2$, the root lattice $\textsf{E}_8$, and the Leech lattice are globally universally optimal. Latter conjecture has recently been proved for $\textsf{E}_8$ and the Leech lattice by Cohn et al. [ 2].

Consider the surjective continuous map [Formula: see text]: [Formula: see text] defined on a compact metric space X. Let [Formula: see text] be the space of all non-empty compact subsets of X equipped with the Hausdorff metric and define [Formula: see text]: [Formula: see text] by [Formula: see text] for any [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we introduce several stronger versions of sensitivities, such as multi-sensitivity with respect to a vector, [Formula: see text]-sensitivity, strong multi-sensitivity. We obtain some basic properties of the concepts of these sensitivities and discuss the relationships with other sensitivities for continuous self-map on [0,[Formula: see text]1]. Some sufficient conditions for a dynamical system to be [Formula: see text]-sensitive are presented. Also, it is shown that the strong multi-sensitivity of f implies that [Formula: see text] is [Formula: see text]-sensitive. In turn, the [Formula: see text]-sensitivity of [Formula: see text] implies that [Formula: see text] is [Formula: see text]-sensitive. In particular, it is proved that if [Formula: see text] is a multi-transitive map with dense periodic sets, then f is [Formula: see text]-sensitive. Finally, we give a multi-sensitive example which is not [Formula: see text]-sensitive.

This paper discusses the properties of flexural waves governed by the biharmonic operator, and propagating in a thin plate pinned at doubly periodic sets of points. The emphases are on the design of dispersion surfaces having the Dirac cone topology, and on the related topic of trapped modes in plates for a finite set (cluster) of pinned points. The Dirac cone topologies we exhibit have at least two cones touching at a point in the reciprocal lattice, augmented by another band passing through the point. We show that these Dirac cones can be steered along symmetry lines in the Brillouin zone by varying the aspect ratio of rectangular lattices of pins, and that, as the cones are moved, the involved band surfaces tilt. We link Dirac points with a parabolic profile in their neighbourhood, and the characteristic of this parabolic profile decides the direction of propagation of the trapped mode in finite clusters.
