Observations on the distribution of Bankia australis calman (Mollusca : Teredinidae) in the Patonga Creek mangrove swamp, New South Wales

The distribution of B. australis was found to be limited to the frontal zone of Avicennia marina despite the presence of apparently suitable wood throughout the mangrove swamp. Numbers of B. australis in dead tree stumps were found to decrease with increasing height and decreasing diameter of the stump. It is suggested that the insulating properties of the wood substratum may affect the distribution of B. australis by minimizing temperature effects during emersion.

Teredicola typicus C. B. Wilson, 1942 (Copepoda, Cyclopoida) from shipworms in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan

Teredicola typicus, previously known only from Hawaii, is reported from eight localities in Australia, two in New Zealand, and one in Japan. Hosts in Australia are Bankia australis, Teredo fragilis, and Teredo furcifera (all new for this copepod); in New Zealand, Bankia australis; and in Japan, Lyrodus pedicellatus. Incidence of the copepod in individual hosts is recorded and notes on its external anatomy are presented.
