This chapter draws together some of the main conclusions of the book: that perceptual cognition yields a form of knowledge valuable in itself, and which plays a central practical role even for those with more advanced forms of understanding, that this means we share an important part of our cognitive lives with nonrational animals, and that these features of Aristotle’s epistemology have important consequences for his account of our learning, and his conception of perception’s role as our most basic source of knowledge.

This chapter examines one of the main strands of thought that can be distinguished in the dialectic on philosophical skepticism. This strand concerns the problem of the external world and how that relates to a particular sort of externalism in epistemology—naturalist externalism—which has taken various forms in the epistemology of recent years, including causal, tracking, process, and virtue varieties. The chapter shows how some practices or faculties or competences, by contrast, are not checkable independently. These are practices or faculties or competences that are “fundamental.” The chapter illustrates how it would be an accomplishment to reduce perceptual cognition to more fundamental cognition, such as armchair cognition, including introspection and pure reason.

The naturalistic epistemology of individual knowledge should follow the procedure usual in the epistemology of science: generalize from suc- cesfull cognitive practices! In the case of naturalistic epistemology the data base — the cogitive practices it is supposed to generalize, are practices based on cognitive skills, like perceptual cognition, language acquisition and use and inference. This would then make cognitive psychology a guide for epistemology
