Global routing is an important link in very large scale integration (VLSI) design. As the best model of global routing, X-architecture Steiner minimal tree (XSMT) has a good performance in wire length optimization. XSMT belongs to non-Manhattan structural model, and its construction process cannot be completed in polynomial time, so the generation of XSMT is an NP hard problem. In this paper, an X-architecture Steiner minimal tree algorithm based on multi-strategy optimization discrete differential evolution (XSMT-MoDDE) is proposed. Firstly, an effective encoding strategy, a fitness function of XSMT, and an initialization strategy of population are proposed to record the structure of XSMT, evaluate the cost of XSMT and obtain better initial particles, respectively. Secondly, elite selection and cloning strategy, multiple mutation strategies, and adaptive learning factor strategy are presented to improve the search process of discrete differential evolution algorithm. Thirdly, an effective refining strategy is proposed to further improve the quality of the final Steiner tree. Finally, the results of the comparative experiments prove that XSMT-MoDDE can get the shortest wire length so far, and achieve a better optimization degree in the larger-scale problem.

AbstractThe distributed manufacturing has become a prevail production mode under the economic globalization. In this article, a memetic discrete differential evolution (MDDE) algorithm is proposed to address the distributed permutation flow shop scheduling problem (DPFSP) with the minimization of the makespan. An enhanced NEH (Nawaz–Enscore–Ham) method is presented to produce potential candidate solutions and Taillard’s acceleration method is adopted to ameliorate the operational efficiency of the MDDE. A new discrete mutation strategy is introduced to promote the search efficiency of the MDDE. Four neighborhood structures, which are based on job sequence and factory assignment adjustment mechanisms, are introduced to prevent the candidates from falling the local optimum during the search process. A neighborhood search mechanism is selected adaptively through a knowledge-based strategy which focuses on the adaptive evaluation for the neighborhood selection. The optimal combinations of parameters in the MDDE algorithm are testified by the design of experiment. The computational results and comparisons demonstrated the effectiveness of the MDDE algorithm for solving the DPFSP.

The facility layout problem (FLP) is a very important class of NP-hard problems in operations research that deals with the optimal assignment of facilities to minimize transportation costs. The quadratic assignment problem (QAP) can model the FLP effectively. One of the FLPs is the hospital facility layout problem that aims to place comprehensive clinics, laboratories, and radiology units within predefined boundaries in a way that minimizes the cost of movement of patients and healthcare personnel. We are going to develop a hybrid method based on discrete differential evolution (DDE) algorithm for solving the QAP. In the existing DDE algorithms, certain issues such as premature convergence, stagnation, and exploitation mechanism have not been properly addressed. In this study, we first aim to discover the issues that make the current problem worse and to identify the best solution to the problem, and then we propose to develop a hybrid algorithm (HDDETS) by combining the DDE and tabu search (TS) algorithms to enhance the exploitation mechanism in the DDE algorithm. Then, the performance of the proposed HDDETS algorithm is evaluated by implementing on the benchmark instances from the QAPLIB website and by comparing with DDE and TS algorithms on the benchmark instances. It is found that the HDDETS algorithm has better performance than both the DDE and TS algorithms where the HDDETS has obtained 42 optimal and best-known solutions from 56 instances, while the DDE and TS algorithms have obtained 15 and 18 optimal and best-known solutions out of 56 instances, respectively. Finally, we propose to apply the proposed algorithm to find the optimal distributions of the advisory clinics inside the Azadi Hospital in Iraq that minimizes the total travel distance for patients when they move among these clinics. Our application shows that the proposed algorithm could find the best distribution of the hospital’s rooms, which are modeled as a QAP, with reduced total distance traveled by the patients.
