The Academy is making an effort to meet rising costs with vigorous attention to expenditures, as well as exploration of opportunities for industry and foundation support of special projects. As part of this exploration the Academy contacted Mead Johnson for funding support and staff assistance in distributing the Red Book to all Academy members through the routine visits to pediatricians by Mead Johnson sales and service personnel. Delivery was never meant to be contingent on a personal visit with the Academy members, though Mead Johnson staff felt they were doing a service and would be received in that light.

Objectives. To examine correlates of applying for accreditation among small local health departments (LHDs) in the United States through 2019. Methods. We used administrative data from the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) and 2013, 2016, and 2019 Profile data from the National Association of County and City Health Officials to examine correlates of applying for PHAB accreditation. We fit a latent class analysis (LCA) to characterize LHDs by service mix and size. We made bivariate comparisons using the t test and Pearson χ2. Results. By the end of 2019, 126 small LHDs had applied for accreditation (8%). When we compared reasons for not pursuing accreditation, we observed a difference by size for perceptions that standards exceeded LHD capacity (47% for small vs 22% for midsized [P < .001] and 0% for large [P < .001]). Conclusions. Greater funding support, considering differing standards by LHD size, and recognition that service mix might affect practicality of accreditation are all relevant considerations in attempting to increase uptake of accreditation for small LHDs. Public Health Implications. Overall, small LHDs represented about 60% of all LHDs that had not yet applied to PHAB. (Am J Public Health. One of the current trends in the technology of supporting capital and preparatory workings is the use of contact grouting. The contact grouting is designed to increase the bearing capacity of the frame supports. The paper considers a method for calculating the support pressure and the displacement of the support crown. The calculation method is based on the interaction of the system of blocks “support – filling layer - broken rock layer - undisturbed rock”. The following factors were taken into account in the method of calculating the frame arch support: depth of the roadway development, mine working cross-section, the support section, the width of the filling layer and its deformation characteristics, as well as the deformation and strength characteristics of the rock mass. Checking of the support strength state is done by comparing the calculated load versus the rated bearing capacity of the support. The developed technique allows making the choice of support in various mining conditions of the application.
