ISSN 0804–4643 Biliary excretion of reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) was estimated in rats during hypoglycemia induced by a 10-min infusion of 1 U of insulin (INS) and for the following 5 h. During that period an increase in biliary rT3 was found. This was seen also during the infusion of exogenous glucagon (10 μg in 1.2 ml of saline per 1 h for 5 h) given independently of INS. The infusion of glucose (1 g/kg per 50 min or 2 g/kg per 110 min) following INS infusion delayed the increase in rT3. The increase in rT3 was prevented by actinomycin D (1 mg/kg) when injected before (90 min), but not after (30 min) INS, and also by cycloheximide (2.5 mg/kg) injected immediately before INS. The same dose of cycloheximide also prevented a similar increase of rT3 during the infusion of exogenous glucagon. Verapamil (5 mg/ kg divided into five doses per 4 h) blunted the increase of rT3. These data indicate that following INS injection counter-regulatory hormones may be responsible for the increased production of rT3; this altered metabolic activity apparently is dependent on protein synthesis. Obituary for Prof. Helena Rašková, MD., DSc., Dr.h.c. *2 January, 1913 †13 April, 2010 Professor Rašková had been a member, and after her retirement, an honorary member of a number of scientific societies and editorial boards in Slovakia as well as abroad. To provide a list of all decorations and honours given to Professor Rašková would take a lot of space. Of them, let us mention only that she had been decorated with the Finnish Sibelius Medal, the French medal of the of Académie de Lutec, the Gold Medal of European Pharmacological Societies for her contributions to the development of world pharmacology, as well as all the decorations obtained from the Slovak Academy of Sciences: Gold Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Honourable Gold Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for her contributions to biological sciences, and the Memorable Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Professor Rašková was an honorary member of the Learned Society of the Slovak Academy of Sciences

AbstractThis personal and professional autobiography covers the 57-year period from 1948 to 2005 and includes the studies at the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the Slovak Technical University and the Faculty of Pharmacy of Comenius University, both in Bratislava, as well as the activities at the Regional Pharmaceutical Research Institute and the Institute of Chemistry of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry in Prague, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and at other research and scientific working places in Slovakia and abroad. It highlights the research on natural substances and enzymes, especially the pectin methyl esterase.

AbstractThe Parasitological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Section of Parasitology (formerly Institute of Parasitology) of the Department of Public Health Sciences of the Sapienza University of Rome have had a long term collaboration within several projects, starting with the first visiting fellowships in 1992 in Rome. Since then, the collaboration between the two institutions has continuously developed and has been focused mainly on the systematics of cestodes, starting in particular with the studies on the genetic polymorphism of fish Proteocephalus tapeworms in different host populations examined by enzyme electrophoresis. Some molecular studies have been later carried out on Eubothrium spp. and Echinococcus multilocularis, and most of our joint interest has been focused on Echinococcus granulosus and more recently, on Ascaris nematodes. The major achievements obtained during these years of collaboration are herein reported.
