ZrO2-Al2TiO5 composite materials with high bending strength and good thermal shock resistance expansion were prepared using partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) powders coated with Al2TiO5 by co-precipitation method. The effects of Al2TiO5 content on the sintering properties, phase composition, microstructure and thermal shock resistance of the zirconia ceramic were investigated.The results show that the apparent porosity of the samples decreased and their bending strength increased with the content of aluminum titanate increasing from 0 to 8 wt%. The samples with 5 and 8 wt% aluminum titanate addtion have excellent thermal shock resistance. The results showed that the addtion of aluminum titanate could enhance the mechanical strength and improve the thermal shock resistance of zirconia ceramic. The XRD and SEM analysis results indicated that the propriety improvement is relative with the change of the microstructure and the increase of tetragonal ZrO2 phase in the composites.

In the present paper, magnesium dititanate (MgTi2O5, M2T) was introduced into aluminum titanate (Al2TiO5, AT) to form AT-M2T solid solution so that the thermal shock resistance of Al2TiO5 could be kept still good while without any decomposition. The effect of MgTi2O5 addition on thermal shock resistance of Al2TiO5 was investigated. The experimental results showed that the thermal shock resistance of Al2TiO5 began to decrease when a little amount of MgTi2O5 was added and then rose with the continuous addition of MgTi2O5, even overrunning that of pure Al2TiO5 when 30mol% MgTi2O5 was contained. It was found that fine solid solution was formed between Al2TiO5 and MgTi2O5, which enhanced the thermal shock resistance of Al2TiO5.

Mullite-aluminum titanate-cordierite multiphase ceramics were prepared by high alumina clinker, Aluminum Titanate and Cordierite. The sintering property and thermal shock resistance of composite materials were tested. The experimental results show that the sinter property and themal shock resistance of Mullite-aluminum titanate-cordierite multiphase ceramics are relatively preferably, which the materials composition are 30 wt.% high alumina clinker, 60 wt.% cordierite and 10 wt.% aluminum titanate. The component samples show porosity of 33.17%, volume density 1.9 % and normal temperature flexural strength 20.66 MPa. Thermal residual flexural strength of the samples is still as high as 10.29 Mpa by 5 times thermal residual tests, and there are only little flexural strength lower after three times earthquake test.

Aiming at optimizing properties of alumina-spinel refractory castables, coarse corundum particles were replaced partially with the particles of a novel porous multi-component CMA (CaO-MgO-Al2O3) aggregate in the same size. Properties including the bulk density, apparent porosity, strength, slag corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance and thermal fatigue resistance of alumina-spinel refractory castables containing CMA aggregates were evaluated contrastively. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of CMA aggregates can significantly improve thermal shock resistance and thermal fatigue resistance of castables, although companying with slight decrease in the bulk density and strength. Moreover, slag penetration resistance of castables can also be enhanced by CMA aggregates with appropriate particle size. The influence of CMA aggregates on properties of alumina-spinel refractory castables depended strongly on their particle size.
