The heaviest analogues of alkynes are investigated to realize a short triple bond between Pb atoms. For a short double bond between Pb atoms, the Pb2 molecule stabilized by dative N-heterocyclic carbenes is investigated. For unsupported and supported short bonds between transition metals, two-coordinate transition-metal and bicyclic four-membered ring complexes are investigated.

Abstract (R3P)2NiCl2 and LiP(SiMe3)2 react in a complex reaction sequence finally yielding (R3P)2Ni(PSiMe3)2 (5), containing a three-membered PNiP ring system, and [R3PNiP(SiMe3)2]2 (6), containing a (PNi)2 four-membered ring system with a nickel-nickel bond, respectively. NMR data are reported.

Abstract The photo-induced reaction between CpNb(CO)4 and Ph2P(CH2)2PR(CH2)2PPh2 (L; R = Ph, Cy) yields the chelated five-membered ring complexes cis-[CpNb(CO)2L] (two isomers in the case of R = Cy). The uncordinated PPh2 group reacts with CpNb(CO)3THF to form CpNb(CO)2(μ-L)CpNb(CO)3. IR, 31P and 93Nb NMR spectra are discussed and compared with corresponding data of the analogous vanadium complexes.

Abstract The stereochemistry of the photo reaction products of tricarbonyl-η-6,6-dimethyl-fulvene-chromium(O) (1) with 7-methyl-and 7-methoxycycloheptatriene was studied by NMR-spectroscopy. Both trienes add to 1, displace a CO ligand, and form substituted dicarbonyl-η3-2-cycloheptadienylene-η5-2-cyclopentadienylidene-propane-chromium(0) complexes. With C7H7CH3 only one isomer (3) is formed with the methyl-group in endo-position and the enyl system encompassing C(1′)-C(3′) of the seven membered ring. C7H7OCH3 yields 3 isomers which were separated by column chromatography. 5 has the same constitution as 3. The isomers 4 and 5 bear the OCH3-group in e^o-position. The enyl system of 4 is located on C(1′)-C(3′), that of 6 on C(3′)-C(5′). 6 rearranges at room temperature to 4.

Recent chemistry of four-membered ring selenium compounds is reviewed followed by a summary of work in our laboratories in this area. 2-Thia-6-selenaspiro[3.3]heptane has been synthesized for the first time. X-ray structures for the latter compound as well as for 2,6-dithiaspiro[3.3]heptane and 2,6-diselenaspiro[3.3]heptane have been determined. These compounds are useful as "rigid-rod" ligands for coordination to transition-metal complexes.
