Despite popular misconceptions, cooperatives present a very successful organizational form worldwide. A recent study found that in the U.S., for example, 134 agricultural cooperatives celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2014. This observation on cooperative longevity is not matched by a corresponding research effort on what makes cooperatives so successful. Most of the extant research seems to focus on intra-cooperative problems that posit significant challenges to cooperatives. This special issue of Sustainability bridges the considerable gap between scholarly work and reality. By focusing on what makes cooperatives so successful for such a long period of time, this issue sheds light on key aspects of cooperative longevity. Bridging social capital, fundamental solutions to excessive heterogeneity-induced high ownership costs, tinkering, cooperative genius, and superior capacity to adapt to shocks and changes are among the factors identified to explain extended cooperative longevity. The insights thereby gained are useful to students of cooperatives, practitioners, and policy makers.

Abstract. This special issue marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Liverpool Tidal Institute (LTI), one of a number of important scientific developments in 1919. The preface gives a brief history of how the LTI came about and the roles of its first two Directors, Joseph Proudman and Arthur Doodson. It also gives a short overview of the research on tides at the LTI through the years. Summaries are given of the 26 papers in the special issue. It will be seen that the topics of many of them could be thought of as providing a continuation of the research first undertaken at the LTI. Altogether, they provide an interesting snapshot of work on tides now being made by groups around the world.

The Department of History of Architecture and Monument Preservation of the Faculty of Architecture of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Standing Committee on the History and Theory of Architecture and Monument Preservation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences organized an online scientific conference on 12th November 2020, in memory of Gyula Hajnóczi, a recognized and highly respected professor of the department of architecture on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, entitled “Scientific Conference in Memory of Gyula Hajnóczi (Conference of Architectural Historians and Historic Building Researchers III)”. This paper intends to introduce this special issue of the journal with the summary of the conference.A Budapesti Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem Építészmérnöki Kar Építészettörténeti és Műemléki Tanszéke, a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia Építészettörténeti, Építészetelméleti és Műemléki Állandó Bizottsága részvételével Hajnóczi Gyula, a tanszék ismert, elismert és nagy tekintélyű egykori professzora tiszteletére, születésének 100. évfordulója alkalmából „Tudományos Konferencia Hajnóczi Gyula Emlékére (Építészettörténészek és Műemlékkutatók Konferenciája III.)” címmel 2020. november 12-én online tudományos konferenciát szervezett.
