ABSTRACTA group of 141,345 immigrants from the Netherlands Antilles, a former colony, live in the Netherlands. An increasing number of these migrants are at or above retirement age, and for them, the question of where they want to grow old becomes relevant. It is important for people to age in a place where they feel at home, as attachment to place increases wellbeing in old age. In this article we discuss how older Antillean migrants in the Netherlands make their house and immediate living environment into a home. We focus on home-making practices in a broader cultural context, and in relation to wellbeing. These topics are addressed by drawing on qualitative life-history interviews with Antillean older people, who live in a co-housing community for older adults. It turns out that objects which remind the participants of their home country play an important role in making a home. Also, the community, with people from similar backgrounds, contributes to a sense of home. Finally, the presence of children and other family members is a key motivation for the participants' decision to age in the Netherlands.

Abstract Seeds are effective and efficient plant reproductive and dispersal structures consisting of an embryo, food supply and protected covering. As the start of the next generation, seeds occupy a critical position in plant life history and in the survival of the species (Black et al., 2000). Seed husbandry formed the basis for early agriculture and eventual civilization. People learned to plant, harvest, and preserve the seeds of certain grasses for winter and they abandoned nomadic life to build permanent settlements (Copeland and McDonald, 2001). Long viability has allowed seeds to be passed from generation to generation, with some, e.g. the Indian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) remaining viable for as long as 1000 years (Janick, 1986). Seeds are remarkably varied and diverse. The orchid species boasts the smallest known seed, a dust-like particle hardly visible to the naked eye (Copeland and McDonald, 2001). Large perennial plants typically have the heaviest seed size, e.g. coconut.. Shape ranges from round or oval in many seed species, to triangular, elliptic, elongated, spiked, thorned, and hairy or winged, depending on the natural method of disposal. Together with differences in size and shape, seeds are highly diverse in a number of other aspects, many of which are relevant to horticultural production and seed technology which has developed to address such issues as seed dormancy, viability and storage life.

Abstract The population dynamics of Stenothoe valida Dana, 1852 were studied at Cheongsapo beach of Busan, Republic of Korea, from March 2019 to March 2020. Sampling was conducted once a month at low tide during spring tides. Specimens were grouped by the cephalic length at 0.025 mm intervals, and classified into four categories: females, ovigerous females, males and juveniles. The sex ratio, defined as females : total males + females, exceeded 0.5 during most of the study period. Brood size was significantly coupled with ovigerous female size. Two to four cohorts appeared at each study period. New cohorts occurred at almost every sampling except in the samples Jun-2, and Nov-2. Life span was estimated at 1-2 months. The juvenile ratio, the ratio of ovigerous females, and the recruitment rate estimated by FiSAT were commonly high in summer and winter. The life history of S. valida was not coupled with water temperature, but had a strong seasonal pattern.

The effect of larval density on the survival, fecundity and body size at two temperatures in experimental populations of C. megacephala was studied. No effect from simultaneous influence of density and temperature on life history characteristics of C. megacephala was found. Significant effects of density and temperature on survival, fecundity and body size were observed. The importance of these results for the population dynamics of C. megacephala is discussed.
