Military air transport aircraft and those airliners converted to air-to-air refuelling roles present special technical challenges to sustain airworthiness as they mature in-service. In this paper a senior Royal Air Force engineer describes the procedures employed to safeguard structural integrity and other ageing transport aircraft problems in general; and in particular, uses the VC10 as a case study to illustrate the development of techniques such as regular proof pressure testing and acoustic emission monitoring of the fuselage as part of a range of activities in the maintenance of this mature type of aircraft. The effects of ageing on the lifecycle of these aircraft types is also considered.
