This chapter examines the simplifications occurring in the proof of the main theorem in the smooth case. It begins by stating the theorem about the existence of an F-definable homotopy h : I × unit vector X → unit vector X and the properties for h. It then presents the proof, which depends on two lemmas. The first recaps the proof of Theorem 11.1.1, but on a Zariski dense open set V₀ only. The second uses smoothness to enable a stronger form of inflation, serving to move into V₀. The chapter also considers the birational character of the definable homotopy type in Remark 12.2.4 concerning a birational invariant.

A filled function approach is proposed for solving a non-smooth unconstrained global optimization problem. First, the definition of filled function in Zhang (2009) for smooth global optimization is extended to non-smooth case and a new one is put forwarded. Then, a novel filled function is proposed for non-smooth the global optimization and a corresponding non-smooth algorithm based on the filled function is designed. At last, a numerical test is made. The computational results demonstrate that the proposed approach is effcient and reliable.

AbstractWe introduce for dynamical systems in metric spaces some numbers which in the case of smooth dynamical systems turn out to be the maximal and the minimal characteristic exponents. These numbers have some properties similar to the smooth case. Analogous quantities are defined also for invariant sets.

We establish the existence of weak solutions to the inclusion problem [Formula: see text] where Ω is a bounded domain in ℝN, [Formula: see text], and ψ ∊ ℝ × ℝ is a maximal monotone odd graph. Under suitable conditions on ψ, g (which reduce to subcritical and superlinear conditions in the case of powers) we obtain the existence of non-trivial solutions which are of mountain pass type in an appropriate not necessarily reflexive Orlicz Sobolev space. The proof is based on a version of the Mountain Pass Theorem for a non-smooth case.

In this article, we prove a finiteness result on the number of log minimal models for 3-folds in $\operatorname{char}p>5$. We then use this result to prove a version of Batyrev’s conjecture on the structure of nef cone of curves on 3-folds in characteristic $p>5$. We also give a proof of the same conjecture in full generality in characteristic 0. We further verify that the duality of movable curves and pseudo-effective divisors hold in arbitrary characteristic. We then give a criterion for the pseudo-effectiveness of the canonical divisor $K_{X}$ of a smooth projective variety in arbitrary characteristic in terms of the existence of a family of rational curves on $X$.
