Research libraries of the provincial scientific archival commissions had been established at the first committee meetings. The collection was born from donated books of the first chairmen and honorary members of the commissions. Firstly conceived with the aim to assist staff in their research activities they partly increased demands of the provincial nobility and students. The identifiers of the library collections were in the availability of manuscripts, official publications of supreme and local authorities, works of the scientists of local lore, the regional press. Inadequate financing of the commissions and the problem of professionalization of personnel did not allow libraries to realize all social functions.

The paper reports on a study of the ways in which Canadian digital library collections make use of knowledge organization systems to support users’ information search behaviour. The study identified 33 digital collections which have employed some type of knowledge organization system in their search interfaces.Cet article présente les résultats d’une étude sur la manière dont les systèmes d’organisation des connaissances sont utilisés par les collections des bibliothèques numériques canadiennes, afin d’assister le comportement de recherche informationnelle des utilisateurs. Cette étude a identifiée 33 collections numériques qui ont employé certains types de systèmes d’organisation des connaissances dans leurs interfaces de recherche.

Built-in datatypes and C++ classes are introduced in this chapter, and discussed in relation to the important notion of encapsulation, which refers to the separation between the internal representation of the datatype and the operations to which it responds. Encapsulation later becomes an important consideration in the design of custom C++ classes that programmers develop themselves. It is illustrated with built-in floating-point datatypes float and double and with the complex class from the C++ standard library. While a sophisticated programmer is aware of the internal representation of data and its resulting limitations, encapsulation allows one to consider these as details and frees one to think at a higher level of program design. Some simple numerical examples are discussed in the text and in the exercises.

Because art institutions in The Netherlands all too often do not include library collections in their emergency response programs, ARLIS/NL decided to prepare guidelines for disaster planning in art libraries. These guidelines, now on the website of ARLIS/NL, serve as a tool in the process of disaster planning and can be customised to the individual situation of each library. This article describes the setting up of the project and its results.
