Purpose To assess impact of adding an email option to phone-based coaching on the number of coaching sessions completed. Design Retrospective analysis of a change in program design. Setting A health plan health and wellness coaching service. Subjects Six thousand six hundred twenty four individuals who scheduled at least one coaching session. Intervention Adding an email option to phone coaching May 1 to August 31, 2020. Measures Association of a participant using an email coaching option with completing 3 coaching sessions; overall number of participants completing 3 coaching sessions when email is offered; participant satisfaction rates; and, average number of participants coached per coach by month. Analysis χ2; linear and logistic regression with gender, age, and education as covariates. Results When we offered email coaching, 29.6% of eligible participants used the option, and compared with the same months the prior year, the proportion of participants completing 3 sessions during those months was higher (73% vs 67%). ( P < .0001) 96.5% of participants who used email, vs 92.0% who did not, completed 3 sessions before their employer’s benefit qualifying deadline. ( P < .0001) More than 85% who responded to the email coaching survey expressed satisfaction. On average, each coach served 43% (486 vs 340) more participants per month when we offered email coaching. ( P < .0001). Conclusion Adding email coaching to phone coaching can increase program utilization by individuals who use email, increase overall program utilization, generate high levels of participant satisfaction, and increase the number of participants served per coach.

In the U.S., approximately 9.3 million lead service lines (LSLs) account for most lead contamination of drinking water. As the commitment to replace LSLs with safer materials grows, empirical evidence is needed to understand which households are benefitting most from current replacement practices. This exploratory study analyzes factors predictive of whether an LSL was replaced fully (from water main to premise) or partially (only the portion on public property). Conventional ordinary least squares, negative binomial, and geographically weighted regression models are used to test the hypothesis that full lead service line replacements (LSLRs) were less common in lower-income, higher-minority neighborhoods under a cost-sharing program design in Washington, D.C. between 2009 and 2018. The study finds supportive evidence that household income is a major predictor of full replacement prevalence, with race also showing significance in some analyses. These findings highlight the need for further research into patterns of full versus partial LSLR across the U.S. and may inform future decisions about LSLR policy and program design.

Abstract MyCare Ohio is a prospective blended managed care payment model program tasked to provide comprehensive and coordinated care to Ohio residents who are dully eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. To understand the administration and day-to-day implementation of care management within MyCare Ohio, n=75 interviews with a total of n=331 personnel from Area Agencies on Aging, Managed Care Plans, and service providers were conducted. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and checked for accuracy. Data were analyzed by iterative reviews and deductive coding in Dedoose. Respondents provided insights on how care management activities are affected by program design features (e.g., ability to opt-out of the Medicare component), transitions between acute and long-term care settings, documentation systems and data-sharing, and high numbers of beneficiaries with behavioral health diagnoses. Implications for practice and policy will be discussed.

Abstract Introduction The need for caregiver respite is well-documented for the care of persons with IDD. Social Assistive Robotics (SAR) offer promise in addressing the need for caregiver respite through ‘complementary caregiving’ activities that promote engagement and learning opportunities for a care recipient (CR) with IDD. This study explored the acceptability and usefulness of a SAR caregiver respite program responsive to feedback from both the CRs and their older family caregivers (age 55+). Methods Caregiver-CR dyads (N =11) were recruited. A mixed methods research design was deployed in three phases: Phase I with four focus groups to inform the program design; Phase II for program demonstration and evaluation with pre- and post-surveys; and Phase III with post-program interviews for feedback and suggestions. Results Quantitative data analysis in Phase II showed both caregivers and their CRs scored favorably the social presence of the robot (Pepper) and social engagement with Pepper. Caregivers also reported positive perceptions of Pepper in terms of anthropomorphism, animation, likeability, intelligence, and safety. Content analysis from Phase III interviews suggested that the SAR may offer physical/emotional respite to caregivers by providing companionship/friendship as well as promoting independence, safety/monitoring, and interactive engagement with children. Discussion SAR has potential in providing respite for older family caregiver demonstrated by the levels of CR engagement and learning with Pepper. Future studies need a longer program design and larger sample size to test the feasibility and efficacy of the intervention.

In recent years, the demand for more culturally competent candidates has risen as employers seek workers highly adaptable to the global marketplace. Study abroad internship programs offer a rich training ground for college students to gain valuable international and intercultural career experience. This study examined the effects of experiential program design on the cultural intelligence of participants in an international internship program. College students from a large Midwestern university were enrolled in an international internship program in Amsterdam, Netherlands; Lima, Peru; or Seoul, South Korea. The program design incorporated principles of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) to increase student reflection on their experience and engage them in the ELT cycle. Participants were scored on the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) before and after the internship, and pre-test and post-test scores were compared and analyzed. Findings indicated significant growth in participants’ cultural intelligence. The intentional incorporation of experiential learning principles in the design and implementation of internship abroad programs has clear potential to increase participant’ intercultural competence and develop their skills for the 21st century workplace.
