This chapter is dedicated to models of human-machine interaction (HCI) that have been influential for the design domain and that form the basis of how we think about designing human-machine interactions today. Digital networked technologies have become increasingly pervasive in today's urban environments. But regardless of the urban dimension, the domains of HCI and interaction design have long examined design approaches that take into account the ways in which humans relate to technologies. Different ways of thinking about the interaction between humans and machines have informed the way we work with technologies. The mental models one adopts when working with technologies contribute not only to how they are viewed but also to how these technologies are shaped in substantial ways.

UseWorld.net is a federated user adaptive Internet portal that supports information exchange and cooperation in research and development in the area of human machine interaction. It has been jointly developed with members of Center of Human-Machine-Systems (ZMMS, TU Berlin), Chair of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics (RWTH Aachen), Chair for Industrial Design (University of Essen) and Center for Human-Machine-Interaction (ZMMI, University of Kaiserslautern). The portal is operated by an independent open incorporated society. It integrates manifold information services (online journal, different thematic link collections, conference database, expert database) and a sophisticated cooperation component to support distributed teams by providing shared workspaces. Software agents for community awareness tasks and a clean and consistent interaction design complete the solution and support the portal’s innovative operation concept, which intends to activate the users to become editors.

According to the development of Industry 4.0 and increase the integration of digital, physical and human worlds, reliability engineering must evolve for addressing the existing and future challenges about that. In this paper, the principle of Industry 4.0 is presented and some of these challenges and opportunities for reliability engineering are discussed. New directions for research in system modeling, big data analysis, health management, cyber-physical system, human-machine interaction, uncertainty, jointly optimization, communication, and interfaces are proposed. Each topic can be investigated individually, but this paper summarizes them and prepared a vision about reliability engineering for consideration and discussion by the interested scientific community.

"Human-machine interaction (HMI) is a multilayered discipline that includes the study of human factors, engineering and interaction design. By its own definition HMI brings together heterogenous design challenges that cross multiple domains. Radical innovation in the field of machine learning, material science, manufacturing processes, sensing and actuating systems are rapidly transforming the way we interact with technology: computers are disappearing into everyday objects, products and systems are becoming more autonomous and proactive, and new interaction techniques are able to capture the richness of the human body expressivity. In this paper, we propose the interface as the material and conceptual place where the novel challenges of HMI should be addressed and solved. Our goal is to open a debate on the centrality of the interface design in industrial design and on the establishment of a multidisciplinary framework to synthesize technological, cognitive, social, cultural, and economic instances. "
