The image quality enhancement process is considered as one of the basic requirement for high-level image processing techniques that demand good quality in images. High-level image processing techniques include feature extraction, morphological processing, pattern recognition, automation engineering, and many more. Many classical enhancement methods are available for enhancing the quality of images and they can be carried out either in spatial domain or in frequency domain. But in real time applications, the quality enhancement process carried out by classical approaches may not serve the purpose. It is required to combine the concept of computational intelligence with the classical approaches to meet the requirements of real-time applications. In recent days, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is considered one of the new approaches in optimization techniques and it is used extensively in image processing and pattern recognition applications. In this chapter, image enhancement is considered an optimization problem, and different methods to solve it through PSO are discussed in detail.

Abstract In the area of research, diagnosis of disease symptoms in the plants duly applying image processing methods is a matter of big concern. The need of the hour is to prepare an efficient plant disease diagnosis system that can help the farmers in their cultivation and farming. This work is an attempt to prepare a framework of plant disease diagnosis system by using the cotton plant leaves. The digital pictures of cotton leaves are obtained to undergo a set of image processing techniques. Thresholding based segmentation techniques are used to remove the region of interest (ROI) i.e., infected part from the enhanced images. Consequently, diseases are detected from the region of interest by using an accurate set of visual texture features. At last treatment actions are taken to supervise the diseases found in the plants. This work will help the farmer’s society to take effective measures to protect their crops from diseases.

Diagnosis of autoimmune diseases can be achieved via Indirect Immunofluorescence (IIF) images using human epithelial (HEp-2) cell as substrate in laboratory. The automation of this diagnosis method is still challenging because of using various liquids to fix the HEp-2 cells in the slides. Due to various fixation methods, nuclear morphology of cell suffers high variability. This survey reviews all the difficulties in the analysis and recognition of pattern recognition and surveys various image processing techniques which leads to the automation diagnosis. This work consist of advantages and disadvantages of various procedures. Eventually, comparison of their corresponding results are presented. I assure that this initial work may attract many medical image processing researchers to enter into this field.
