On the basis of the work of Tjon and Blume [1, 2], a model for calculating Mössbauer spectra in the presence of a fluctuating electric field gradient is developed. It is shown that spectra with one doublet or with two doublets may be obtained depending on the rate of fluctuation. The model is successfully applied to the cases of FeSb2, FeSi and Fe3Se4, where electrons are progressively delocalized when the temperature is increased.

The temperature behavior of the observed asymmetries in the quadrupole doublets of the Mössbauer spectra of a superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3−x Fe x O y sample, for x = 0.125, suggests the existence of small local magnetic fields, superimposed to an electric field gradient in the positions of the iron atoms, which are assumed to be the Cu(1) sites of the structure. Some possible origins of those fields are discussed.
