Abstract A previously developed ion chromatographic method for the determination of salts in watersoluble certifiable color additives was automated, using a Model 12 Dionex ion chromatograph equipped with a program controller and programmable computing integrator. Programs were written for the program controller for continuous automated analysis of up to 59 samples in about 20 h, with periodic regeneration of the suppressor column and automatic shut-down. All data were processed through the integrator, programmed to give results in weight/weight percent. Recoveries were performed on 4 anions: chloride, phosphate, bromide, and sulfate. Twenty-five color additives could be analyzed by the method. Standard deviations in the determinations ranged from 0.01 to 0.16 at addition levels of 0.20–9.45; with 6 replications. Recoveries for addition levels of 0.2–5.0; with 2 replications fell within the range of 84.0–105.0;. Approximate lower limits of detection for each anion were as follows: chloride, 0.07;; phosphate, 0.10;; bromide, 0.06;; sulfate, 0.07;.

En este trabajo se evaluaron las concentraciones de los iones solubles en agua en las partículas inhalables (PM10) usando cromatografía iónica. Para el análisis de Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, PO43-, Na+, K+, Ca2+ y Mg2+ en partículas inhalables colectadas en la ciudad de Maracaibo (Venezuela) se utilizó la técnica de cromatografía iónica (CI) con un sistema con un sistema DIONEX modelo 2000i/sp. El análisis por CI fue comparado con los valores obtenidos por la técnica de ICP-OES. Los resultados por CI están muy cercanos a los obtenidos por ICP-OES y es una excelente alternativa confiable y exacta para el análisis de cationes en partículas atmosféricas. Los altos niveles de sulfato, nitrato y cloruro encontrados podrían estar relacionados con importantes emisiones de la industria petrolera, petroquímica; y el tráfico automotor en la atmósfera de la ciudad. Al comparar las concentraciones de los iones evaluados en este estudio con las zonas rurales de Venezuela y el mundo revelo que estos son alrededor de 10 veces más altos. Las concentraciones de los iones evaluados en Maracaibo fueron similares a los reportados en La Concepción (Venezuela) y Heredia (Costa Rica). Sin embargo, los valores reportados para ciudades como Ahváz (Irán), Shanghai (China) y Haungshi (China), son aproximadamente de 2 a 10 veces mayores que en este estudio. Palabras clave: PM10, partículas atmosféricas, aniones y cationes. ABSTRACT: In this work concentrations of water soluble ions in inhalable particles (PM10) were evaluated using ion chromatography. For the analysis of Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, PO43- and Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ in inhalable particles collected in Maracaibo (Venezuela) the ion chromatography (IC) technique was used with a DIONEX model 2000i / sp system. The analysis by IC of metallic cations was compared with the values obtained by ICP-OES techniques. The results by IC closely agreed with those obtained by ICP–OES and this excellent alternative technique enabled accurate and reliable analysis of cations in atmospheric particles. The high levels of sulfate, nitrate and chloride found could be related to important emissions from the petroleum, petrochemical industry; and automotive traffic in the atmosphere of the city.  Comparing the concentrations of ions evaluated in this study with rural areas of Venezuela and the world revealed that these are about 10 times higher. The concentrations of ions evaluated in Maracaibo were similar to those reported in La Concepción (Venezuela) and Heredia (Costa Rica). However, reported values for cities like Ahváz (Iran), Shanghai (China) and Haungshi (China), are approximately 2 to 10 times higher than in this study.
