We present an alternative scheme for generating the N-qubit cluster state in the ion trap system. This scheme is based on adiabatic passage and thus is insensitive to the small fluctuations of the system parameters. During the process of evolution, quantum information transfer occurs only between the ions, and the collective vibrational mode remains in the vacuum state without excitation. Thus, the scheme is robust against phonon decoherence.
