SummaryThe thrombolytic effect of pig plasmin was tested in a double blind trial on patients with deep venous thrombosis in the lower limb. Only patients with not more than three days old thrombi were selected for this study. The diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis was made clinically and confirmed by phlebography. Lysofibrin Novo (porcine plasmin) or placebo (porcine plasminogen) was administered intravenously to the patients. The enzyme and the placebo were delivered as lyophilized powder in labelled bottles - the contents of the bottles were unknown to the doctor in charge of the clinical administration of the trial. An initial dose of plasmin/plasminogen of 30 unit per kg body weight given slowly intravenously (1-1% hours infusion) was followed by a maintenance dosis of 15 per cent the initial dose per hour for the following 5-7 hours. In most cases a similar maintenance dosis was given the next day. In all patients heparin was administered after ending the plasmin/plasminogen infusion. The results of the treatment was evaluated clinically as well as by control phlebo- grams the following days.A statistically significant improvement was found in the plasmin treated group compared with the placebo (plasminogen) treated group. Thrombolysis was obtained clinically and phlebographically in 65 per cent of the plasmin treated group, but only in 15 per cent of the control patients were improvements found. This study has thus demonstrated that plasmin treatment according to a standard scheme was able to induce thrombolysis. There were only a few and insignificant side effects. Allergic reactions have not been seen and only very simple tests are required.

SummaryThe pharmacological effect of a new preparation of urokinase (Leo) has been studied, both in vitro and in six patients suffering from thrombo-embolic disorders. It was a non-toxic, effective fibrinolytic agent if given in sufficient dosage. A regimen consisting of an initial dose of 7,200 ploug units per kg body weight, followed by hourly maintenance therapy with 3,600 ploug units per kg intravenously, gave satisfactory evidence of whole body fibrinolytic activity. The preparation had minor but insignificant thromboplastic activity both when assayed in the laboratory and when given to patients.

Background. In recent years, various methods of combined anesthesia during abdominal surgery have been introduced into clinical practice.Aim. To demonstrate the possibilities of a combination of high prolonged spinal anesthesia and endotracheal anesthesia during abdominal surgery.Materials and methods. A clinical case of combined use of high prolonged spinal anesthesia and endotracheal anesthesia in a 48-year-old patient with a tumor in the right half of the ascending part of the right half of the colon is presented.Results. The patient received a puncture of the spinal space at a standard point and was installed a spinal catheter in the cranial direction for 3 cm. An isobaric solution of marcaine in the initial dose of 20 mg was injected into the catheter. The regulation of the development of the block was regulated by the inclination of the head end of the table by 60°. After that endotracheal anesthesia was performed on the basis of fentanyl and propofol. This combination allowed to expand the scope of surgical intervention, provided adequate pain relief intraoperatively and in the postoperative period, without the use of narcotic analgesics. With the appearance of signs of recovery of pain sensitivity, intraoperatively or in the postoperative period, re-introduction of the anesthetic into the spinal catheter was performed in half of the initial dose with liquor barbotage. In the early postoperative period, the patient was on strict bed rest with a head end of the bed raised at 30–45°. The method provides complete segmental blockade and muscle relaxation in the area of operation, stability of central hemodynamics during surgery and in the postoperative period.Conclusion. This type of anesthesia is more easily tolerated by patients, accompanied by early awakening and extubation, characterized by stability of central hemodynamics, reduced risk of complications, the possibility of prolonging anesthesia with lower doses of narcotic analgesics in the intraoperative period, providing high-quality anesthesia in the postoperative period without resorting to the use of narcotic analgesics.

Pesticide uptake into plants is typically reported as percentage uptake of the amount applied but in studies of the mechanism of cuticular penetration this approach has not been helpful It can be shown that relating percentage uptake to initial dose of bentazone applied to Vicia faba foliage cannot provide pertinent relationships that can be used to explain cuticular uptake mechanisms However applying the principles of Ficks Law and using mass or molar quantities does provide excellent linear relationships between mass uptake and initial dose applied Universal equations can be derived that relate dose uptake to initial dose applied onto plant leaves
