Describes the Enneagram as a useful personality typology for pastoral care, especially when dealing with the shadow dimensions of life usually associated with the concept of sin. Explores how the Enneagram contributes uniquely to pastoral counseling and spiritual direction by inviting individuals to dialogue with their distortions and brokenness in ways that do not invalidate the self or separate them from God.

It is surprising that Karl Rahner (1904-1984), as a systematic theologian, provided essential impulses for practical theology. But he played an important role in planning and editing the "Handbuch der Pastoraltheologie" (1964-1972). The basis for this work was Rahners view of practical theology as a science of the self-fulfillment of the church in the respective current situation. However, this ecclesial conception of pastoral theology soon encountered opposition. On the other hand, his demand for a “new mystagogy” was often taken up for concepts of mystagogical pastoral care and mystagogical learning.

The current situation in church and modern society makes it necessary to leave comprehensive theories of pastoral care. Facing a youth that can only be described as an aggregate, and regarding a pluralization of practice, methods and approaches, a contemporary theory of youth ministry will not be a complete design but rather a flexible theory, which is open for different situations and diverse ways of action. This article outlines a theological concept of youth work corresponding to the self-conception of the church by revealing its characteristic trait as a koinonia (community, communion and relationship) as a suitable pattern for such a flexible theory of youth ministry needed today.
