Childhood hypertension (HTN) has become a significant public health issue because of the increased risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood. However, childhood HTN is underrecognized and underdiagnosed in clinical practice. The European Society of Hypertension in 2016 and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 2017 published updated guidelines for the screening, prevention, and management of pediatric HTN. There were notable differences between the two guidelines as well as many similarities. The updated AAP guidelines have clarified and simplified the recommendations for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood HTN based on current evidence. This review highlights the important developments in both guidelines, focusing on recent advances in the classification and treatment of childhood HTN.

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the use of social media, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok amongst otolaryngology societies. Study Design: Online assessment of social media pages and engagement amongst otolaryngology societies. Setting: Otolaryngology societies and their online engagement with the general community as well as those in the field of otolaryngology. Methods: A list of otolaryngology societies affiliated with Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings (COSM)and American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNSF) were compiled. Two reviewers independently accessed popular social media platforms for societal accounts and their online engagement. Results: There is a wide range of social media participation amongst societies. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) has the highest numbers of followers on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The highest follower count on Twitter and Facebook was followed by the American Otological Society (AOS). The American Laryngological Association had no social media accounts. On YouTube, The American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) had the highest amount of engagement. Conclusion: Social media usage and a robust online presence can provide patients a source of reliable healthcare information, educational opportunities to residents, and may be used for recruitment. Otolaryngology societies should consider improving their social media presence as a way to educate the public, patients, and future recruits.

After a period of mass incarceration that spanned the 1970s through the 2010s, the United States remains the leading incarcerator in the world. Incarceration rates in the United States outpace those of other countries by several hundred per 100,000. Incarceration rates began to decline slightly in 2009, when there was a loss of fiscal, political, and moral will for mass incarceration policy and practices. First, the onset of smart decarceration approaches, the historical context from which smart decarceration stems, and the societal momentum that led to the conceptualization of smart decarceration are described. Smart decarceration is a lead strategy in social work that has been adopted by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare as one of the 12 Grand Challenges for Social Work for the decade 2015–2025. Finally, an overview of the current status of smart decarceration and details shifts and initiatives to pursue at the intersection of social work and smart decarceration is provided.
