The equilibrium position of a spherical air bubble in a solid body rotating flow around a horizontal axis is investigated experimentally. The flow without bubbles is checked to be solid body rotating. The area of influence of the bubble is characterized to determine for each bubble whether the incoming flow is perturbed or not. The demineralized water used is shown to Tbe contaminated, and spinning of the bubble's interface is observed and measured. From the measurement of the bubble's equilibrium position, drag and lift coefficients are determined. They appear to be dependent on two dimensionless numbers. Eo the Eötvös number and Rω the rotational Reynolds number (or Taylor number Ta) can be varied independently by changing the control parameters, and for that reason are the convenient choice for experiments. (Re, Ro) with Ro the Rossby number is an equivalent choice generally adopted in the literature for numerical simulations, and Re denotes the Reynolds number. When using this second representation, the Ro number appears to be an indicator of the influence on the force coefficients of the shear, of the curvature of the streamlines of the flow and of the bubble's spinning. The bubble's spinning effect on the lift force is far from trivial. Its contribution explains the important gap between lift values for a bubble (not spinning) in a clean fluid and for a bubble (spinning) in a contaminated fluid as present.

Hemocyanin, the respiratory pigment of the scorpion Androctonus australis is composed of 24 kidney shaped subunits. A model of architecture supported by many indirect arguments has been deduced from electron microscopy (EM) and immuno-EM. To ascertain, the disposition of the subunits within the oligomer, the 24mer was submitted to three-dimensional reconstruction by the method of single-exposure random-conical tilt series.A sample of native hemocyanin, prepared with the double layer negative staining technique, was observed by transmisson electron microscopy under low-dose conditions. Six 3D-reconstructions were carried out indenpendently from top, side and 45°views. The results are composed of solid-body surface representations, and slices extracted from the reconstruction volume.The main two characters of the molecule previously reported by Van Heel and Frank, were constantly found in the solid-body surface representations. These features are the presence of two different faces called flip and flop and a rocking of the molecule around an axis passing through diagonnally opposed hexamers. Furthermore, in the solid-body surface of the top view reconstruction, the positions and orientations of the bridges connecting the half molecules were found in excellent agreement with those predicted by the model.

Aim: To assess reliability indices of Air Bubble Test (ABT) for anatomical and functional success in external Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). Methods: Prospective case series of nasolacrimal duct obstruction underwent DCR. Functional success defined as Munk score 0 & 1 & anatomical success as free irrigation at followup.ABT performed by putting antibiotic drops into eye& asking patient to exhale while keeping nose & mouth closed. Formation of bubbles at punctum considered as positive test. Specificity, sensitivity, positive & negative predictive values calculated. Results: There were 103 DCR in 97 patients(23 male,74 female)with mean age 45.56 yr. Anatomical and functional success was 99.02% & 98.05%, respectively.ABT showed sensitivity 96.07%, specificity 100% for anatomical success after DCR. Sensitivity and specificity were 97.02% & 100% for functional success. Conclusion: As non-invasive procedure ABT is a good tool to assess success of DCR, though lacrimal syringing remains the gold standard.
