Abstract Mirex (dodecachlorooctahydro -1,3,4 - metheno-2H-cyclobuta[cd]pentalene) and photomirex (8-monohydromirex) are separated from interfering polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in lake sediments. Sediment samples were extracted with acetone-hexane (1+1) in an ultrasonic apparatus and the extracts were cleaned up on conventional Florisil columns. A charcoal-polyurethane column was used to quantitatively separate Mirex and photomirex from PCBs. Recoveries of Mirex, photomirex, and PCBs from the spiked sediments were each >95% at 0.1 to 3 ppb levels.
