In an era of increasing energy production from renewable sources, the demand for components for renewable energy systems has dramatically increased. Consequently, managers and investors are interested in knowing whether a company associated with the semiconductor and related device manufacturing sector, especially the photovoltaic (PV) systems manufacturers, is a money-making business. We apply a new approach that extends prior research by applying decision trees (DTs) to identify ratios (i.e., indicators), which discriminate between companies within the sector that do (designated as “green”) and do not (“red”) produce elements of PV systems. Our results indicate that on the basis of selected ratios, green companies can be distinguished from the red companies without an in-depth analysis of the product portfolio. We also find that green companies, especially operating in China are characterized by lower financial performance, thus providing a negative (and unexpected) answer to the question posed in the title.

Strategic planning and decision making, nonetheless making energy policies and strategies, is very extensive process and has to follow multiple and often contradictory objectives. During the preparation of the new Slovenian Energy Programme proposal, complete update of the technology and sector oriented bottom up model of Reference Energy and Environmental System of Slovenia (REES-SLO) has been done. During the redevelopment of the REES-SLO model trade-off between the simulation and optimisation approach has been done, favouring presentation of relations between controls and their effects rather than the elusive optimality of results which can be misleading for small energy systems. Scenario-based planning was integrated into the MESAP (Modular Energy System Analysis and Planning) environment, allowing integration of past, present and planned (calculated) data in a comprehensive overall system. Within the paper, the main technical, economic and environmental characteristics of the Slovenian energy system model REES-SLO are described. This paper presents a new approach in modelling relatively small energy systems which goes beyond investment in particular technologies or categories of technology and allows smooth transition to low carbon economy. Presented research work confirms that transition from environment unfriendly fossil fuelled economy to sustainable and climate friendly development requires a new approach, which must be based on excellent knowledge of alternative possibilities of development and especially awareness about new opportunities in exploitation of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

Existing methods of exergoeconomic analysis and optimization of energy systems operate with single average or marginal cost values per exergy unit for each material stream in the system being considered. These costs do not contain detailed information on (a) how much exergy, and (b) at what cost each exergy unit was supplied to the stream in the upstream processes. The cost of supplying exergy, however, might vary significantly from one process step to the other. Knowledge of the exergy addition and the corresponding cost at each previous step can be used to improve the costing process. This paper presents a new approach to exergy costing in exergoeconomics. The monetary flow rate associated with the thermal, mechanical and chemical exergy of a material stream at a given state is calculated by considering the complete previous history of supplying and removing units of the corresponding exergy form to and from the stream being considered. When exergy is supplied to a stream, the cost of adding each exergy unit to the stream is calculated using the cost of product exergy unit for the process or device in which the exergy addition occurs. When the stream being considered supplies exergy to another exergy carrier, the last-in-first-out (LIFO) principle of accounting is used for the spent exergy units to calculate the cost of exergy supply to the carrier. The new approach eliminates the need for auxiliary assumptions in the exergoeconomic analysis of energy systems and improves the fairness of the costing process by taking a closer look at both the cost-formation and the monetary-value-use processes. This closer look mainly includes the simultaneous consideration of the exergy and the corresponding monetary values added to or removed from a material stream in each process step. In general, the analysis becomes more complex when the new approach is used instead of the previous exergoeconomic methods. The benefits of using the new approach, however, significantly outweigh the increased efforts. The new approach, combined with some other recent developments, makes exergoeconomics an objective methodology for analyzing and optimizing energy systems.

The article discusses an approach to the construction of digital twins and digital shadows, based on the use of scientific tools for complex energy research in Russia. It is proposed to use, as their basis, mathematical models of energy systems and software systems and databases developed at the Energy Systems Institute of SB RAS, for calculations using these models. For each area of research, an ontological model is developed, over which mathematical and information models are built and integrated, as the basis of digital twins and digital shadows of energy objects. In turn, scientific prototypes of digital twins and digital shadows can be used in complex energy studies. To support this research, a modified architecture of the multi-agent intelligent environment is proposed. It is considered as the basis of the future IT infrastructure that integrates modern information and intelligent technologies and implements a new approach to building digital twins and digital shadows using scientific tools.

Diagnosis procedures primarily aim at locating the control volumes where anomalies occurred. This is not a simple task since the effects of anomalies generally propagate through the whole system and affect the behavior of several components. Some components may therefore present a reduced efficiency, although they are not sources of operation anomalies, due to nonflat efficiency curves. These induced effects are a big obstacle in the use of thermoeconomic techniques for the search of the origin of the anomalies. On the other hand, the real cause of the alteration of component behavior is the modification of its characteristic curve, due to degradation or failures. According to this concept, a new approach, based on an indicator measuring the alteration of the characteristic curve of the component affected by the operation anomaly, is proposed and applied to a test case power plant.

Multilevel DC/AC Inverters have various structures. They have many advantages. Unfortunately, most existing inverters content too many components (independent/floating batteries/sources, diodes, Capacitors and switches). The author introduces the "Laddered Multilevel DC/AC Inverters in this paper that is new approach of the development in this area. Their simple structure and clear operation are obviously different from the existing inverters. Its application in Solar Panel Energy Systems is successful. The simulation and experimental results strongly support our design. We believe that these inverters will draw much attention over the world, and be applied in other renewable energy systems.
