Feasibility is demonstrated for a new solvent extraction method to separate free and bound fractions in hapten immunoassays, without the need to centrifuge. A novel mixer-separator device used in conjunction with solvent extraction makes the new separation method simple and rapid, avoids the need for decantation, and has applications for all mass transfer operations involving solvent extraction.
