Abstract Assessment of dimensional and geometrical data on the humeral head replacement (HHR) objects is essential for solving the relevant designing problems in the physics of reverse engineering (RE). In this work, 2D-assessment for human humerus was performed using the computed tomography (CT) technique within the RE plan, after which the 2D images of humeral objects were converted into 3D images. The conversion was successful and indicated a clear difference in the 2D and 3D estimates of sizes and geometry of the humerus. The authors have analyzed and confirmed experimentally the statistical information on the relevant anatomical objects. The results of finite-element simulation of the compressive stresses affecting the geometry of 3D surface mapping were analyzed using SolidWorks software. For developing the biomechanical design of an HHR object suitable biomaterials were selected, and different metal-based biomaterials are discussed as applied at various loads. New methodology is presented for the size estimation of humeral head - both anatomical and artificial - in 3D-shape. A detailed interpretation is given for the results of CT D-measurements.

A quadratic mapping method based on curvature for mesh generation is presented in this paper. The method starts from the triangulation of 2D parametric surface by applying the Advancing Front Technique (AFT) and Delaunay Triangulation (DT) together with 3D feature information. Then 3D surface mapping from 2D elements is realized by quadratic mapping method with curvature measure information. After that, triangular mesh over 3D surface is automatically generated. Besides, graded mesh control strategy is discussed in the paper for the sake of generating mesh with higher quality. Finally, several application examples are given to show the characteristics of the presented method.

Monocyte adherence to endothelial or extracellular matrices plays an important role in triggering monocyte activation in extravascular sites of infection, chronic inflammatory disorders, and tissue damage. Migration of monocytes in the tissues involves the response to a chemoattractant and movement by a series of attachments and detachments to the extracellular matrices which are regulated by expression and distribution of specific receptors for the matrix proteins such as fibronectin (FN). The VSAs (very late antigens or beta integrins), a subfamily of the transmembrane heterodimeric integrin receptors, have been thought to play a major role in monocyte adherence to the extracellular matrices and cells. In this subfamily, VLA-5 and VLA-4 are believed to be the most essential integrins mediating monocyte adherence to FN. In the present report, we have established and compared different procedures for morphological evaluation of the expression and distribution of the FN receptors on human monocytes in order to investigate their response to endotoxin or cytokine stimulation.
