Low frequency vibration assisted drilling (LFVAD) is regarded as one of the most promising process in CFRP/Ti stacks drilling. This work carries the investigation of the difference between conventional drilling and LFVAD based on kinematic model. The experiments are conducted under varied vibration amplitude to a specific feed rate, also under varying spindle speeds, feed rates when the ratio of amplitude to feed rate is fixed. Then the hole quality of CFRP is evaluated based on the analysis of drilling force, chip morphology, chip extraction. The results show that there is rarely no difference between conventional drilling and LFVAD in drilling mechanism when the drilling diameter is over 1 mm. Because the impact effect caused by drill vibration is already weak. It is found that the severe mechanical damage of the CFRP holes surface could be significantly reduced due to the fragmented chips obtained in vibration drilling. The maximum instantaneous feed rate combined with feed rate and amplitude plays a significant role in CFRP hole quality. Lower maximum instantaneous feed rate results in better hole wall quality and less entry delamination. Spindle speed has no visible influence on entry delamination, while higher spindle speed improves the hole surface quality due to the resin coating phenomenon.

Abstract This paper will broaden our previous works about the asymmetric and quasi-zero stiffness oscillator named AQZSO. In this paper, the dynamic stiffness of the AQZSO will be investigated. Then, the condition for which the minimum dynamic stiffness is quasi-zero around the equilibrium position is also determined. By using Multi-Scale method, the fundamental resonance response of the AQZSO subjected to the vibrating base is analyzed, in which the dynamic stiffness is expressed as a fifth-order approximate polynomial through expanding Taylor series. The stability of the response is then found out via nonlinear Routh-Herwitz criterion. Moreover, because of existing the sliding friction between the cylinder and piston, the nonlinear and varying-time dynamic characteristics, the complex dynamic response of the AQZSO is the need for discovery by performing direct integration of the original dynamic equation through using 5th-order Runge-Kutta algorithm. In this work, the friction force model of cylinder will be identified through virtual prototyping technique and genetic algorithm. Additionally, the Poincáre map is also employed to analyze the bifurcation phenomenon, coexistence of multiple solutions. The traction basin of the period-1, period-2 and period-3 solution is determined, indicating that the attractor basin is influenced by the asymmetric of the stiffness curve. This research will offer a useful insight to design low frequency vibration isolation systems.

Abstract In the drilling process of difficult-to-cut materials, conventional drilling has resulted in various problems such as high drilling temperature and poor machining quality. Low-frequency vibration-assisted drilling has great potential in overcoming these problems since broken chips are generated. In order to promote the application of low-frequency vibration-assisted drilling device in machining difficult-to-cut materials. In this paper, a low-frequency vibration-assisted drilling device is developed by using a novel ring flexure hinge as the elastic recovery mechanism. First, based on the theory of elastic mechanics and mechanical vibration, the stiffness of the ring flexure hinge is designed theoretically, and the influence of its structural parameters on its deflection is analyzed. And then the correctness of the theoretical design is further verified by static and dynamic simulation and stiffness test. Finally, the vibration performance of the device is tested under no-load condition, and the actual drilling test is conducted to verify the drilling performance. The results show that the device could realize the axial low-frequency vibration with constant frequency-to-rotation ratio and amplitude stepless adjustment and present good working stability under no-load and load conditions. In the actual drilling test of titanium alloy and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP)/ titanium alloy laminated structure, the device under appropriate processing parameters breaks the titanium alloy chip into small pieces and reduces the drilling temperature by 44% and inhibits the secondary damage of CFRP. It is demonstrated that the device could meet the actual processing requirements. And it also provides guidance for the design of low-frequency vibration-assisted drilling device.
