The contact problem of a driving tyred wheel, pressed and rolling over an elastically similar half-plane, is considered. Although applicable to a wide range of shrink-fitted assemblies, the simplified model is solved to study the practical case of an elastically similar steel tyre mounted on a locomotive steel wheel subjected to tractive rolling. The behaviour of the system at the tyre—substrate interface is studied using closed-form solutions to calculate the state of stress within the tyre. Conditions leading to incipient slip and/or plasticity are identified and mapped for different loads and geometries.

We consider quasi-static contact problem on frictional heating on a sliding contact of a rotating rigid cylinder and a half-plane. The cylinder is pressed towards the half-plane material. The problem is reduced to solution of a singular integral equation with respect to contact stresses. Solution of the singular equation is looked for in a class of functions limited on the edge, with two additional conditions to determine timedependent boundaries of the contact area. Temperature at the contact and inside the half-plane is determined in terms of contact stresses.

Closed-form expressions are given for the Muskhelishvili potentials created by wedge-shaped indenters contacting elastic half-planes. The potentials are given for normal and sliding contact of both similar and dissimilar materials. Surface values of the tension σxx0 are also presented.

Closed-form expressions for the contact pressure between a blunt wedge and an elastically dissimilar half-plane are presented. It is demonstrated that for practical values of the material mismatch parameter, β, and coefficient of friction, f, the results do not differ significantly from the elastically similar problem.
