This paper is reviewing the amplification of XUV radiation at 519.7 and 498.5 Å with a gain-length product of 2.5 and 2.2 for the 4f-3d and 4d-3p transition in an oxygen Z-pinch plasma. Time resolved measurements of the O VI (519.7 Å) transition were performed and the dependence of the line intensity on the discharge current and initial gas pressure is reported.

Many laboratories are actively investigating radiation spectra emitted from high temperature/high density plasmas produced using gas-puff Z-pinch machines and high power lasers. Spectral-line intensities from these plasmas can be useful temperature and density diagnostics. In a well-diagnosed plasma, information on the emission spectrum can also be used to test the accuracy of theoretical rate coefficients.Recently time-resolved spectra from an oxygen-like argon plasma produced in a gas-puff z-pinch were measured in the wavelength range 150–200 Å . Over this wavelength range the spectrum contains mostly the Δn = 0 (L-shell) transitions in ArX-ArXIV and some weak transitions for n = 3 to n = 4 of ArVI-ArVIII. The measured spectra show the predominance of 0-like Ar L-shell transitions.

Plasmas of high reproducibility that are suitable for beam-plasma experiments are generated by a pulsed-power z-pinch discharge. The z-pinch device is designed as a plasma target for the investigation of ion beam-plasma interactions. The dynamic plasma state is characterized by the electron density, the electron temperature, and the magnetic field distribution, which are observed using time-resolved diagnostics. For z-pinch discharges in hydrogen, average electron densities of up to (2.6 ± 0.1) × 1018 electrons/cm3 were measured interferometrically. Electron temperatures in the range 2–7 eV are determined by time-resolved spectroscopy. The reproducibility of the electron density of the z-pinch discharge in terms of shot-to-shot fluctuations is estimated to be better than 3%. This is a favorable condition for performing beam-plasma experiments.
