In Reply.— Cardoni et al have scientifically studied the question of whether a papain paste, in the form of commercially available meat tenderizer, is efficacious in bee sting treatment. Their experimental model (Toxicon 1981;19:851-855) showed no beneficial effect of topically applied papain. However, as stated in that article, their method of artificially injecting the venom via syringe and needle may explain the lack of efficacy. Some bees leave the stinger and venom sack at the wound site.
