Simultaneous determination of iron and copper in children's sera by FAASA new and simple flame atomic-absorption spectrometric (FAAS) method is proposed for simultaneous determination of iron and copper in children's sera. It is based on single-step sample pretreatment (deproteinization with 3 mol L-1HCl, ratio 1:1) and single-step calibration using 1.5 mol L-1HCl standard. During method's optimization a short multifactorial design experiment was used. The proposed method assures accuracy, sensitivity and precision comparable to that of the reference methods. The new approach is simple and time-, labour- and serum-saving, the latter being especially important in pediatric diagnostics.

Steps on surfaces are important in crystal growth theory, as the step free energy determines the two-dimensional nucleation rate, island growth, step flow and spiral growth. In this paper, it is illustrated that in general in lattice models the step energy of a single step cannot be determined directly by counting broken bonds. A new method is proposed that uses the geometry of a step together with the bonding topology, allowing for a straightforward determination of single-step energies for any case. The method is applied to an anisotropic Kossel model.

Abstract We describe a rapid method for determining cholesterol sulfate in plasma and erythrocytes. After its single-step isolation by means of anion-exchange chromatography cholesterol sulfate is hydrolyzed, trimethylsilylated, and determined by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. 5 beta-Cholestan-3 alpha-ol sulfate is used as internal standard. The method enables simultaneous determination of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in plasma. We applied it for the diagnosis of seven patients with recessive X-linked ichthyosis. Concentrations are given for plasma and erythrocytes from four unaffected relatives of patients with X-linked ichthyosis, a patient with placental sulfatase deficiency, two patients with other types of ichthyoses, and 20 controls. The method may also be of use for the rapid isolation of other organic sulfates from biological material, as illustrated by a comparison of gas chromatograms of urine from a normal pregnant woman and that from a patient with placental sulfatase deficiency.

Abstract A multiresidue method was developed for the determination of 12 organophosphorus insecticides (diazinon, parathion methyl, fenitrothion, pirimiphosmethyl, malathion, fenthion, chlorpyrifos, quinalphos, methidathion, ethion, azinphosmethyl, coumaphos), one carbamate (pirimicarb), and one amidine (amitraz) in unifloral and multifloral honeys. The analytical procedure was based on the matrix solid-phase dispersion of honey on a mixture of Florisil and anhydrous sodium sulfate in small glass columns and subsequent extraction with a low volume of hexane–ethyl acetate (90 + 10, v/v), assisted by sonication. The insecticide residues were determined by capillary chromatography with nitrogen–phosphorus detection and confirmed by mass spectrometry. Average recoveries at the 0.05–0.5 μg/g levels were >80% for organophosphorus insecticides and about 60% for the other insecticides, pirimicarb and amitraz, with relative standard deviations <10%. The detection limit for the different insecticides ranged between 6 and 15 μg/kg. The main advantages of the proposed method are that extraction and cleanup are performed in a single step with a low volume of organic solvent. The method is simple, rapid, and less laborious than conventional methods. Several Spanish honeys were analyzed with the proposed method and no residues of the studied insecticides were found.
