We have studied the vortex dynamics in intrinsic Josephson junctions in mesa-shaped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O y single crystals. By applying magnetic fields parallel to the copper oxide layers of the junctions, Josephson vortex-flow branches were observed in addition to multiple resistive branches on the I–V characteristics. From the field dependence of the maximum flow voltage, the flow velocity of the vortices was estimated to be ~3×106 m/s at 4.2 K, which is close to that of the highest-velocity mode of the electromagnetic wave in them. On the other hand, at 77 K, the velocity decreased from the highest to the lowest with an increase in the number of junctions in the mesas.

We observed subbranch splitting in the low-bias vortex-flow branch of a dense-Josephson-vortex state in current-voltage characteristics of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x intrinsic Josephson junctions in the long-junction limit. We suggest that each subbranch corresponds to a plasma mode in serially coupled Josephson junctions, manifested in the Josephson vortex-flow current-voltage characteristics resonating with the plasma modes.
