We present a new adaptive control strategy to isolate and stabilize turbulent states in transitional, stably stratified plane Couette flow in which the gravitational acceleration (non-dimensionalized as the bulk Richardson number $Ri$) is adjusted in time to maintain the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) of the flow. We demonstrate that applying this method at various stages of decaying stratified turbulence halts the decay process and allows a succession of intermediate turbulent states of decreasing energy to be isolated and stabilized. Once the energy of the initial flow becomes small enough, we identify a single minimal turbulent spot, and lower-energy states decay to laminar flow. Interestingly, the turbulent states which emerge from this process have very similar time-averaged $Ri$, but TKE levels different by an order of magnitude. The more energetic states consist of several turbulent spots, each qualitatively similar to the minimal turbulent spot. This suggests that the minimal turbulent spot may well be the lowest-energy turbulent state which forms a basic building block of stratified plane Couette flow. The fact that a minimal spot of turbulence can be stabilized, so that it neither decays nor grows, opens up exciting opportunities for further study of spatiotemporally intermittent stratified turbulence.

AbstractWe present an equilibrium solution of plane Couette flow that is exponentially localized in both the spanwise and streamwise directions. The solution is similar in size and structure to previously computed turbulent spots and localized, chaotically wandering edge states of plane Couette flow. A linear analysis of dominant terms in the Navier–Stokes equations shows how the exponential decay rate and the wall-normal overhang profile of the streamwise tails are governed by the Reynolds number and the dominant spanwise wavenumber. Perturbations of the solution along its leading eigenfunctions cause rapid disruption of the interior roll-streak structure and formation of a turbulent spot, whose growth or decay depends on the Reynolds number and the choice of perturbation.

We experimentally and numerically investigate the temporal aspects of turbulent spots spreading in a plane Couette flow for transitional Reynolds numbers between 300 and 450. Spot growth rate, spot advection rate and large-scale flow intensity are measured as a function of time and Reynolds number. All these quantities show similar dynamics clarifying the role played by large-scale flows in the advection of the turbulent spot. The contributions of each possible growth mechanism, that is, growth induced by large-scale advection or growth by destabilization, are discussed for the different stages of the spot growth. A scenario that gathers all these elements is providing a better understanding of the growth dynamics of turbulent spots in plane Couette flow that should possibly apply to other extended shear flows.

Turbulence is ubiquitous in nature and engineering applications. Although Kolmogorov’s (C. R. Acad. Sci. URSS, vol. 30, 1941a, pp. 301–305;Dokl. Akad. Nauk URSS, vol. 30, 1941b, pp. 538–540) theory suggested a unique turbulent state for high Reynolds numbers, multiple states were reported for several flow problems, such as Rayleigh–Bénard convection and Taylor–Couette flows. In this paper, we report that multiple states also exist for turbulent plane Couette flow with spanwise rotation through direct numerical simulations at rotation number$Ro=0.2$and Reynolds number$Re_{w}=1300$based on the angular velocity in the spanwise direction and half of the wall velocity difference. With two different initial flow fields, our results show that the flow statistics, including the mean streamwise velocity and Reynolds stresses, show different profiles. These different flow statistics are closely related to the flow structures in the domain, where one state corresponds to two pairs of roll cells, and the other shows three pairs. The present result enriches the studies on multiple states in turbulence.
