AbstractPolystoma vernoni(Polystomatidae) is a new species in the urinary bladder ofPtychadena oxyrhynchusin KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.Ptychadenais a true African species and the 49 currently known species in Africa harbour 11 polystome parasites.Ptychadena oxyrhynchushas an extensive distribution through Africa and harboursPolystoma prudhoeiin West Africa. This new parasite differs significantly fromP. prudhoei. The new species is distinguished by its long body relative to its haptor length, its unique shape and its ratio of marginal hooklets. In a sample of 13 frogs, 53.8% were infected with up to 18 parasites per host (mean intensity 4.86).

Gymnosporia swazica, a new restricted-range southern African species, is described and illustrated here. Known from only a few localities in Swaziland and bordering parts of South Africa (Mpumalanga and northeastern KwaZulu-Natal), G. swazica grows as an understorey shrub or small tree in forest, often among granite boulders. Diagnostic characters for G. swazica include chartaceous leaves, usually shorter than 25 mm, 3-valved capsules usually 6–7 mm long, which are smooth, green turning yellow, and a white aril partially covering the brownish seed. Its closest relative appears to be G. buxifolia (capsules rugose, mottled white-and-brown), one of the most widespread members of the genus in southern Africa, but it can also be confused with G. maranguensis (capsules red, 2-valved) and G. harveyana (capsules pink to red, 3-valved; aril orange, completely covering the seed).

Palpares longimaculatus nov. sp. is described from West Africa. This species resembles P. radiatus Rambur, 1842 and P. incommodus (Walker, 1853) from the same region and is very similar to P. kalahariensis Stitz, 1912 from South Africa. The characters differentiating these species are indicated. An identification key to the West African species of Palpares is provided and all the keyed species are illustrated.

Southern AfricanChoeradesWalker, 1851 are reviewed. Six species are recognised (C.analogossp. n.described from South Africa: KwaZulu-Natal,C.bella(Loew, 1858),C.flavipes(Wiedemann, 1821),C.multipunctata(Oldroyd, 1974),C.nigrapex(Bigot, 1878),C.nigrescens(Ricardo, 1925)) and a key for their separation is provided. Distributional information demonstrates that species are found primarily in moderate to higher rainfall regions. The little that is known of their biology is discussed. Species are usually associated with indigenous forest habitats where larval development takes place in decomposing wood.

Eurytoma erythrinae Gates and Delvare, new species, is described and illustrated. This species was reared from fieldcollected galls on Erythrina spp. (Fabaceae) induced by Quadrastichus spp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), in Tanzania, Ghana, and South Africa. It is compared with very similar African species, Eurytoma radicicola Risbec. A new species of Obuloides, Obuloides crinitus sp. nov., is described based on females and males collected from the galls and twigs of Grewia occidentalis (Tiliaceae) in South Africa. Obuloides crinutus is closely related to O. namibiensis and O. rajamohani but can be distinguished by the finely granulated shields, a character that no other species of this genus has. Another notable difference is the length of prodorsal setae v2, which are longer and more strongly serrated compared to the other species of this genus which have very short and mostly smooth setae. Males of this species lack setae d1. A key to known species is provided.

Platepistoma seani sp. nov. is described from deep water off KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. It can be separatedfrom its nearest relative, Platepistoma guezei (Crosnier, 1976), by its thicker setal covering that completely hides the an-terolateral teeth from dorsal view, less well defined carapace regions, more spinous anterolateral and posterolateral cara-pace margins, sparser but more prominent dorsal carapace spines, more prominent spines on the carpus of the cheliped, and a relatively narrower male telson.

The genus Kimulodes was described by Tjeder and Hansson (1992) to accommodate two species, Kimulodes sinuatus originally described as Helicomitus sinuatus by Kimmins (1949) and a new species they named K. angulicornis. Within the tribe Ascalaphini, this genus is characterized by the hairless genae, the absence of a tuft of hairs at the base of the forewing in males, in contrast to the African species of Ascalaphus, and the antennae of males being sinuate or sharply arched with stout tufts of hairs on the basal flagellomeres. The genus Kimulodes was known from Central and East Africa, but remained unrecorded from West Africa. The material collected by a colleague, Jean-Michel Maldès (CIRAD), during a prospecting mission in Togo in 1990 included a male of an undescribed species of Kimulodes, which is described below. Furthermore, examination of the collection of the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, yielded a male and a female of K. angulicornis from an unrecorded locality in the Central African Republic.

Periglossum podoptyches is described as a new species from the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. As a rare species its conservation status is assessed as Vulnerable. This new species is closely related to both Periglossum mackenii and P. kassnerianum from which it differs mainly in having folded flaps of tissue at the base of the face of the restricted basal stalk of the staminal corona lobes. A comparative table with diagnostic morphological features and a key to the species of Periglossum are provided.
