AbstractObjective:To report and discuss the surgical use of ultrasonography for draining a parapharyngeal space infection in a child.Case report:The use of image-guided surgery for draining a parapharyngeal abscess has been previously reported, with computed tomography for an intra-oral approach and ultrasound for an external approach. We present the first case report of a four-year-old child with a retropharyngeal abscess and a deep parapharyngeal abscess in whom neck ultrasound was used to assist intra-oral drainage. Conclusion:Neck ultrasound may be used in paediatric patients to visualise access to the parapharyngeal space through the intra-oral route for abscess drainage.

AbstractBenign chondroma affecting the soft tissues is uncommon. This tumour is particularly rare in the neck. We present the first case of soft tissue chondroma arising in the parapharyngeal space of a 20-year-old man with a two-year history of a gradual sensation of a swelling in the pharynx with increasing snoring. The CT and pathological features of this lesion will be discussed. We suggest that a peroral approach should be considered for benign parapharyngeal tumour which has been demonstrated on imaging to be in the anterior parapharyngeal space, especially for tumours that are medial to the pterygoid muscles even though the tumour is a large one.

ABSTRACT Introduction We report a rare case of isolated parotid abscess due to Mycobacterium fortuitum in an immunocompetent adult female, which to the best of our knowledge (on internet search) is the first case of its type. Methodology Diagnosis was based on MTBDR CM assay (Hain's) culture, followed by a positive TBAg MPT64 culture for MOTT. The patient was treated with abscess drainage and antibiotics with good results. A parotidectomy was not required in our patient. Conclusion Mycobacterium fortuitum parotid abscess is very rare. A knowledge of the pathogenicity of this organism and careful culture methods seem to be the key of accurate diagnosis. Treatment protocols are still subject to research. ABSTRACT Schwannoma is a benign, encapsulated tumor that is derived from schwann's cells. The most common site is parapharyngeal space of the neck; oropharyngeal occurrence is extremely rare. Fourteen year male boy presented with a history of difficulty in swallowing, more for solids for the last 8 months. The patient also had a change of voice for the last 5 months and was muffled in character. Examination showed single lobulated mass having smooth surface, of the size of approximately 5 × 4 cm and was arising from the tonsillolingual sulcus. The fine needle aspiration cytology from the lesion, reported to be schwannoma. The mass was excised completely under general anesthesia with the help of bipolar cautery. We report first case of schwannoma of tonsillolingual sulcus and also review the literature of the rare entity. How to cite this article Verma H, Dass A, Punia RPS. AbstractA case report of pseudolymphoma of the parapharyngeal space is presented, together with a literature review of pseudolymphoma and management suggestions for such lesions when they occur in the head and neck. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this represents the first case report of pseudolymphoma presenting within the parapharyngeal space. The key to management of these lesions is based on accurate diagnosis, with differentiation of pseudolymphoma from lymphocytic lymphoma, the disease process which it mimics.
