A new family, genus and species of apseudomorphan Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) from the Caribbean Sea

A new family, of apseudomorphan Tanaidacea, Sphaeromapseudidae, is discovered and described from the Caribbean Sea. Sphaeromapseudidae is tentatively placed between the Metapseudidae and Tanzanapseudidae. A new genus Sphaeromapseudes and species, S. plumosetosa, associated with intertidal coral rubble, are described.

Ovalidota milleri new genus, new species, is a chiridotid holothurian with an egg-shaped body, a broad oral field surrounded by 18 19 (?20) tentacles, and body wall ossicles in the form of typical Chiridota wheels gathered into papillae and also scattered among the papillae. It is known from two localities in the Caribbean, near St. Vincent and at Grand Cayman Island, in bathyal depths of 366-414 metres. The egg-shaped body of this new genus is unique in the Order Apodida. When more material becomes available for study, Ovalidota milleri may be referred to a new family.

Thirteen new species of sponges are described from coral reefs of the Netherlands Antilles and the Colombian Caribbean. Species were collected during quantitative investigations of reef sponges performed by students of the University of Amsterdam in the period between 1984 and 1991. Most of the reported specimens were taken from undersides of coral rubble, crevices or reef caves (sciophilous habitats) and without exception are small encrusting or fistular sponges. The material reported in this paper includes a new genus and species of Placospongiidae, Placospherastra antillensis n. g. n. sp. , the first Caribbean representatives of the genera Triptolemma (Pachastrellidae) and Megaciella (Acarnidae), viz. Triptolemma endolithicum n. sp. and Megaciella incrustans n. sp., a new species of Timeidae, Timea curacaoensis n. sp., a new species of Microcionidae with peculiar colloscleres, Clathria (Thalysias) collosclera n. sp., two new species of Chondropsidae, viz. Batzella fusca n. sp., and Strongylacidon unguiferum n. sp., three new species of Coelosphaeridae, viz. Forcepia (Forcepia) minima n. sp., Forcepia (Forcepia) fistulosa n. sp., and Forcepia (Leptolabis) microlabis n. sp., a new species of Crellidae, Crella (Grayella) beglingerae n. sp., a new species of Hymedesmiidae, Hymedesmia (Hymedesmia) bonairensis n. sp., and a new species of Mycalidae, Mycale (Paresperella) vitellina n. sp. Most species are represented by only small fragments removed from the substrate by scalpel or diving knife, leaving little and often crumbled preserved type material. This study is intended to demonstrate that the small crusts dominating easily accessible shallow water coral rubble habitats in the Caribbean remain understudied.

The new genus Svenzea is created to group three sponge species from tropical reef environments of the Caribbean Sea and Indonesia: Pseudaxinella (?) zeai Alvarez, Van Soest & Rützler, Svenzea cristinae n. sp. and S. devoogdae n. sp. The genus shows affinities with members of both Halichondrida and Haplosclerida but it is assigned to the family Dictyonellidae based on shared microanatomical and developmental features. The higher taxonomic position of Svenzea is a subject for future investigations.

The present study examines the diversity of the alpheid shrimp genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955 in the western Atlantic. Five species are described from the shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea: Salmoneus hispaniolensis sp. nov., from the southern coast of the Dominican Republic; S. camaroncito sp. nov. from Panama and Honduras; S. armatus sp. nov. from Panama; S. degravei sp. nov. from Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Tobago; and S. wehrtmanni sp. nov. from Panama, Honduras, Mexico (Yucatan) and Tobago. In addition, S. ortmanni (Rankin, 1898) is reported from new localities in Panama and Costa Rica; S. carvachoi Anker, 2007 from Mexico (Yucatan) and the Brazilian states of Pernambuco and Paraíba; S. cavicolus Felder & Manning, 1986 from Turks and Caicos Islands; and S. setosus Manning & Chace, 1990 from Mexico (Yucatan). Most specimens were collected at shallow depths (0.5–2 m), on soft bottoms ranging from mudsilt to coarse sand mixed rubble, under rocks or coral rubble; S. degravei sp. nov. appears to be associated with burrows of the callianassid ghost shrimp, Neocallichirus grandimana (Gibbes, 1850).

Calcareous sponges from the Lesser Antilles were recently inventoried and several specimens morphologically resembling species of the genus Ascoleucetta were collected. Morphological and molecular (C-LSU and ITS) analyses indicated that these specimens from the Lesser Antilles constituted a new genus. They lack the conspicuous and very characteristic ornamentation of the inhalant apertures found in two out of three species of Ascoleucetta, including the type species A. compressa. In the molecular analyses, the specimens clustered as an independent lineage, distant from the clade of A. compressa. Based on these results, we decided to erect a new genus, Bidderia gen. nov., whose type species is Bidderia bicolora gen. nov. sp. nov. Considering this new discovery, we are proposing to transfer the species A. amitsba to the genus Bidderia gen. nov. and to rediagnose Ascoleucetta.

A new genus is established in Eunicidae: Fauchaldius gen. nov., a symbiont of hexactinellid sponges that has only subacicular hooks, with F. cyrtauloni sp. nov. as its type species. Nine new species are described in Eunice: E. hernandezi sp. nov., E. ibarzabalae sp. nov., E. mikeli sp. nov. and E. nonatoi sp. nov. all belonging to the fuscusbidentate group; E. edwinlinkae sp. nov., E. hartmanae sp. nov., E. lanai sp. nov., and E. miurai sp. nov. all belonging to the flavus-tridentate group; and E. donathi sp. nov. that belongs to the fuscus-unidentate group. Further, two new species are described in Marphysa: M. angeli sp. nov. that is grouped with species having only composite falcigers, and M. orensanzi sp. nov. that belongs to the group with composite falcigers and composite spinigers. A key to identify genera in Eunicidae is included. A key to identify species of Eunice is appended.
