AbstractThe growth of supermassive black holes (SBHs) appears to be closely linked with the formation of spheroids. There is a pressing need to acquire better statistics on SBH masses, since the existing samples are preferentially weighted toward early-type galaxies with very massive SBHs. With this motivation we started a project aimed at measuring upper limits on the mass of the SBHs in the center of all the nearby galaxies (D < 100 Mpc) for which STIS/G750M spectra are available in the HST archive. These upper limits will be derived by modeling the central emission-line widths observed in the Hα region over an aperture of ∼0.1″. Here we present our results for a subsample of 22 S0-Sb galaxies within 20 Mpc.

Here we present our preliminary results for a subsample of 76 bulges.

ABSTRACT Black hole mass measurements outside the local Universe are critically important to derive the growth of supermassive black holes over cosmic time, and to study the interplay between black hole growth and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we present two measurements of supermassive black hole masses from reverberation mapping (RM) of the broad C iv emission line. These measurements are based on multiyear photometry and spectroscopy from the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN) and the Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES), which together constitute the OzDES RM Program. The observed reverberation lag between the DES continuum photometry and the OzDES emission line fluxes is measured to be $358^{+126}_{-123}$ and $343^{+58}_{-84}$ d for two quasars at redshifts of 1.905 and 2.593, respectively. The corresponding masses of the two supermassive black holes are 4.4 × 109 and 3.3 × 109 M⊙, which are among the highest redshift and highest mass black holes measured to date with RM studies. We use these new measurements to better determine the C iv radius−luminosity relationship for high-luminosity quasars, which is fundamental to many quasar black hole mass estimates and demographic studies.

Context. The empirical relations between supermassive black holes and their host spheroids point towards the crucial role of galactic nuclei in affecting the properties of their hosts. A detailed understanding of how the activity of a galactic nucleus regulates the growth of its host is still missing. Aims. To understand the activity and the types of accretion of supermassive black holes in different hosts, it is essential to study the radio-optical properties of a large sample of extragalactic sources. In particular, we aim to study the radio spectral index trends across the optical emission line diagnostic diagrams to search for potential (anti)correlations. Methods. To this goal, we combined flux densities from the radio FIRST survey at 1.4 GHz (with the flux density range 10 mJy ≤ F1.4 ≤ 100 mJy) for 396 SDSS sources at intermediate redshift (0.04 ≤ z ≤ 0.4) with the Effelsberg radiotelescope measurements at 4.85 GHz and 10.45 GHz. The information about the optical emission-line ratios is obtained from the SDSS-DR7 catalogue. Results. Using the Effelsberg data, we were able to infer the two-point radio spectral index distributions for star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies (with a combined contribution to the line emission from the star formation and AGN activity), Seyferts, and low ionization narrow emission region (LINER) galaxies. Conclusions. While studying the distribution of steep, flat, and inverted sources across optical diagnostic diagrams, we found three distinct classes of radio emitters for our sample: (i) sources with a steep radio index, high ionization ratio, and high radio loudness, (ii) sources with a flat radio index, lower ionization ratio, and intermediate radio loudness, (iii) sources with an inverted radio index, low ionization ratio, and low radio loudness. The classes (i), (ii), and (iii) cluster mainly along the transition from Seyfert to LINER sources in the optical diagnostic (Baldwin, Phillips & Telervich; BPT) diagram. We interpret these groups as a result of the recurrent nuclear-jet activity.

In order to study environmental effects on the nuclear activity in galaxies, we have been conducting a spectroscopic study of Hickson Compact Groups of galaxies (HCGs, Hickson 1982) which are the densest agglomeration of galaxies. We obtained nuclear spectra of 62 galaxies in 29 HCGs in the spectral range 6200–7000Å with the 188cm telescope at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. These spectra were classified into the three types by using the emission line ratio [NII]λ6583/Hα; (1) AGN: [NII]λ6583/Hα >0.6, (2) HII nuclei: [NII]λ6583/Hα <0.6, and (3) Absorption: no emission line. We compared the nuclear activity of galaxies in HCGs with that of nearby galaxies (Ho 1996; Ho, Filippenko & Sargent 1997) which provides a representative sample of field galaxies. In early-type spirals (Sa-Sbc), the fraction of HII nuclei in HCGs is smaller than that in the field galaxies, while the fraction of absorption in HCGs is larger than that in field galaxies. On the other hand, in early-type galaxies (E-S0a) and late-type spirals (Sc-P), we found little difference in the nuclear activity between HCGs and field galaxies.
