The Helium Stockpile is a manipulable folding structure of hundreds of wooden blocks, representing the transformation between surface and solid through a foldable one-dimensional chain. The sculpture grew out of an unexpected collaboration between a sculptor and two mathematicians, giving the structure a mathematical basis through which it is guaranteed to be foldable into essentially any three-dimensional shape.

The title compound, [MnCl2(C24H20N6)], has been synthesized and characterized based on the multifunctional ligand 2,5-bis(2,2′-bipyridyl-6-yl)-3,4-diazahexa-2,4-diene (L). The MnIIcentre is five-coordinate with an approximately square-pyramidal geometry. TheLligand acts as a tridendate chelating ligand. The mononuclear molecules are bridged into a one-dimensional chain by two C—H...Cl hydrogen bonds. These chains are assembled into a two-dimensional layer through π–π stacking interactions between adjacent uncoordinated bipyridyl groups. Furthermore, a three-dimensional supramolecular framework is attained through π–π stacking interactions between adjacent coordinated bipyridyl groups.

In the title compound, [Hg3Br6(C21H24N6)2] n , the two Hg atoms (one of which lies on a twofold axis) are tetrahedrally coordinated by two Br atoms and two imidazole N atoms from two different 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene ligands. The complex has an infinite one-dimensional chain structure. The chains are further connected by C—H...Br interactions to form a three-dimensional framework.

Subtle modifications ofN-donor ligands can result in complexes with very different compositions and architectures. In the complexcatena-poly[[bis{1-[(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)methyl]-1H-imidazole-κN3}copper(II)]-μ-benzene-1,3-dicarboxylato-κ3O1,O1′:O3], {[Cu(C8H4O4)(C10H9N5)2(H2O)]·2H2O}n, each CuIIion is six-coordinated by two N atoms from two crystallographically independent 1-[(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)methyl]-1H-imidazole (bmi) ligands, by three O atoms from two symmetry-related benzene-1,3-dicarboxylate (bdic2−) ligands and by one water molecule, leading to a distorted CuN2O4octahedral coordination environment. The CuIIions are connected by bridging bdic2−anions to generate a one-dimensional chain. The bmi ligands coordinate to the CuIIions in monodentate modes and are pendant on opposite sides of the main chain. In the crystal, the chains are linked by O—H...O and O—H...N hydrogen bonds, as well as by π–π interactions, into a three-dimensional network. A thermogravimetric analysis was carried out and the fluorescence behaviour of the complex was also investigated.

Abstract H2bpe(H2PO3)2 (1) and H2bpe(H2PO4)2 ・H2O (2) (H2bpe = ethene-trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridinium), H2PO3 = dihydrogenphosphite, and H2PO4 = dihydrogenphosphate) have been prepared and structurally characterized. In compound 1, the dihydrogenphosphite anions form dimers, with a P···P distance of 4.2073(7) Å , by two O-H···H hydrogen bonds, and the dimeric dihydrogenphosphite units interact with the H2bpe cations by way of N-H···O and O-H···O hydrogen bonds, resulting in a one-dimensional chain. The chains are held together by C-H···O interactions. In compound 2, the phosphate ions are connected by O-H···O hydrogen bonds into an unusual 2D square gridtype framework with P···P separations ranging from 4.7533(7) to 4.9506(8) Å . The H2bpe cations crosslink the dihydrogen phosphate layers by N-H···O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular network with channels. The water molecules in compound 2 occupy these channels and make O-H···O bonds to adjacent phosphate O atoms and also O-H···O bonds to the next water O atom in the channel.
