A novel 3D metal–organic framework (MOF) {[Zn3(bpdc)3 (p-4-bpmb)](DMF)2}n ( 1) (H[Formula: see text]-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid; p-4-[Formula: see text],4-bis(pyridine-4-ylmethoxy)benzene) has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Compound 1 exhibits a 3D pillar-layered framework based on the trinuclear {Zn3} building blocks, consisting of Zn-dicarboxylate layers and bipyridyl-derivative pillars. Furthermore, it features three-fold interpenetrating 8-connected hex-type topology. In addition, its thermal stability and luminescent property have also been investigated.

Abstract Assembly of different metal-organic framework (MOF) building blocks into hybrid MOF-on-MOF heterostructures is promising in chemistry and materials science, however the development of ternary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures with controllable architectural and compositional complexity is challenging. Here we report the synthesis of three types of ternary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures via a multiple selective assembly strategy. This strategy relies on the choice of one host MOF with more than one facet that can arrange the growth of a guest MOF, where the arrangement is site-selective without homogenous growth of guest MOF or homogenous coating of guest on host MOF. The growth of guest MOF on a selected site of host MOF in each step provides the opportunity to further vary the combinations of arrangements in multiple steps, leading to ternary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures with tunable complexity. The developed strategy paves the way towards the rational design of intricate and unprecedented MOF-based superstructures for various applications.

A chiral metal-organic framework formulated as [Zn3(L-TMTA)2(4,4′-bpy)4]·24H2O (1) was prepared from the reaction of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O with trimesoyltri(L-alanine) (L-TMTAH3) in the presence of 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy). Compound 1 features linear trinuclear secondary building blocks [Zn3(syn-syn-COO)2(μ2,η3-COO)2]2+. Each linear trinuclear secondary building block is further linked to another eight ones around it by four L-TMTA3– ligands and eight 4,4′-bpy ligands, leading to the construction of a uninodal three-dimensional framework with triangular prism-like one-dimensional channels. Dehydrated compound 1 displays remarkable adsorption selectivity on CO2 and water vapour over N2 gas.
