Abstract Recent studies have shown that students’ interests are decisive in making a substantiated higher education choice, yet do not indicate how students decide which interests they aim to pursue. This study aimed to find the considerations students have when weighing interests and higher education programmes. Thematic analysis was applied to uncover considerations based on semi-structured interviews with 20 Dutch high-school seniors. Students weighed their interests from an interest-to-programme perspective (contrasting interests and deciding which is most important for their future) and from a programme-to-interest perspective (evaluating how possible programmes reconcile with one’s interests). By applying both perspectives simultaneously, students dynamically considered which programmes and interests they wished to pursue. These findings imply that higher education choice theory and studies should acknowledge that the programmes and interests students consider are dependent on the feed forward of the considered interests on programmes and the feed back of considered programmes on interests.

This chapter gives an account on the experiences of a female STEM faculty member's journey from high school through graduate school, and then entering the workforce as she navigates the high and low points of being a black woman in a science field, as a science educator that will mentor other black women scientists, while also trying to sustain a viable family life. Her introduction to science, the profiles of mentors that provided her a support network, and the barriers that continue to plague black women in their preparation for a career in science, remains as blockades to access, to what is currently considered the most needed competency area to fill the workforce of the 21st century.

Based on current societal transitions and in the context of lifelong learning, both upper secondary education, higher education and vocational training are invited to think about how to enable people, at any stage of their life, to take part in stimulating learning experiences. The expectancy to be present at one core location is getting more and more difficult in this (inter)national society. In addition, the student population is changing and balancing work and family life becomes an important point of priority. Therefore, it is important to make education less dependent on location and time and improve flexibility within the learning trajectory (Lakhal, De Sherbrooke, Bateman, 2017). Next to this, there are growing insights about the need to collaborate.
