Many public sector agencies currently facing mass retirements from long-term, experienced workers are struggling to fill higher-level leadership roles. The County of San Diego has employed creative methods to address this “brain drain.” Through intensive leadership development, the county is developing its future leaders using a variety of cutting-edge training tools. According to Human Resource Director Carlos Arauz, “By involving the executive leadership team and by implementing a comprehensive Leadership Academy, among other key HR-related improvements, the county is working to become an employer of choice.” This article will outline the steps taken by the County of San Diego to implement the Leadership Academy and will offer tips for other agencies wishing to embark on their own leadership development efforts.

<p>This paper explores the challenges of executive leadership and human resource development in a nonprofit setting. While human capital is a vital asset to any organization, it is particularly vital to nonprofit organizations, which expect their employees to work for less, and often do more, than their counterparts at for-profit companies. Managing these resources presents some challenges. Some of these challenges are similar to the challenges that for-profits face, such as attracting and retaining talent and developing leaders. Some of the challenges are unique, such as managing volunteers and the high-burnout rates of non-profit employees. Executive Leadership Development (ELD) is also a critical challenge faced by nonprofits. However, all Human Resource Development (HRD) issues within a nonprofit setting must be tackled with the organization’s mission in mind. </p>

With the complex nature of impacts of cybersecurity breaches, it is critical that organizational have cybersecurity project managers that can make sound managerial and leadership decisions. Often cybersecurity project managers act quickly with managerial decisions at work. When time is of the essence, strategic thinking, strategic communication, and strategic decision making are critical to organizational effectiveness and productivity. Decision making and strategic communications are just a few skills that executive leadership coaches can teach. This article explores the values and potential benefits of executive coaching as a leadership development tool for information technology and cybersecurity project managers.

The health of Canadians depends on effective leadership among health care providers to facilitate the translation of new health discoveries into clinical practice. Clinician-scientists play an important role in bridging the gap between research and clinical practice, and require effective leadership skills to advance clinical practice successfully. To accelerate the leadership development in clinician scientist trainees, with the aim of developing strong leaders in administration and health advocacy, the Leaders in Medicine (LIM) training program at the University of Calgary created an Executive Leadership Coaching Program involving three phases: 1) an evidence-based evaluation tool, the Core Values IndexTM (CVI), that was used to identify the key drivers behind how individuals can be most effective in making their contribution; 2) small group workshops to debrief the results of the CVI assessment; and 3) one-on-one executive coaching sessions to facilitate the discovery, development and deployment of individual leadership capabilities. Coaching in leadership strategies enables clinician-scientist trainees to lead, influence, manage and deliver science-based improvements into the practice of medicine. We strongly recommend that other Canadian scientist-clinician training programs consider opportunities like the ones we offer to our LIM trainees. This training has important implications for the delivery of healthcare in Canada.
