Five new LnCPs decorated with H2tdc and oxalate mixed ligands exhibit a 2D sql layer structure, then the 2D layers are further linked by intermolecule hydrogen bonds to form a 3D supramolecular network with sxb topology.

Two new CdII MOFs, namely, two-dimensional (2D) poly[[[μ2-1,4-bis(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)butane](μ2-heptanedioato)cadmium(II)] tetrahydrate], {[Cd(C7H10O4)(C18H18N4)]·4H2O} n or {[Cd(Pim)(bbimb)]·4H2O} n (1), and 2D poly[diaqua[μ2-1,4-bis(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)butane](μ4-decanedioato)(μ2-decanedioato)dicadmium(II)], [Cd2(C10H16O4)2(C18H18N4)(H2O)2] n or [Cd(Seb)(bbimb)0.5(H2O)] n (2), have been synthesized hydrothermally based on the 1,4-bis(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)butane (bbimb) and pimelate (Pim2−, heptanedioate) or sebacate (Seb2−, decanedioate) ligands. Both MOFs were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In 1, the CdII centres are connected by bbimb and Pim2− ligands to generate a 2D sql layer structure with an octameric (H2O)8 water cluster. The 2D layers are further connected by O—H...O hydrogen bonds, resulting in a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular structure. In 2, the CdII centres are coordinated by Seb2− ligands to form binuclear Cd2 units which are linked by bbimb and Seb2− ligands into a 2D hxl layer. The 2D layers are further connected by O—H...O hydrogen bonds, leading to an 8-connected 3D hex supramolecular network. IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and solid-state photoluminescence analysis were carried out on both MOFs. Luminescence sensing experiments reveal that both MOFs have good selective sensing towards Fe3+ in aqueous solution.

Polymorph (Ia) of eldoral [5-ethyl-5-(piperidin-1-yl)barbituric acid or 5-ethyl-5-(piperidin-1-yl)-1,3-diazinane-2,4,6-trione], C11H17N3O3, displays a hydrogen-bonded layer structure parallel to (100). The piperidine N atom and the barbiturate carbonyl group in the 2-position are utilized in N—H...N and N—H...O=C hydrogen bonds, respectively. The structure of polymorph (Ib) contains pseudosymmetry elements. The two independent molecules of (Ib) are connectedviaN—H...O=C(4/6-position) and N—H...N(piperidine) hydrogen bonds to give a chain structure in the [100] direction. The hydrogen-bonded layers, parallel to (010), formed in the salt diethylammonium 5-ethyl-5-(piperidin-1-yl)barbiturate [or diethylammonium 5-ethyl-2,4,6-trioxo-5-(piperidin-1-yl)-1,3-diazinan-1-ide], C4H12N+·C11H16N3O3−, (II), closely resemble the corresponding hydrogen-bonded structure in polymorph (Ia). Like many other 5,5-disubstituted derivatives of barbituric acid, polymorphs (Ia) and (Ib) contain theR22(8) N—H...O=C hydrogen-bond motif. However, the overall hydrogen-bonded chain and layer structures of (Ia) and (Ib) are unique because of the involvement of the hydrogen-bond acceptor function in the piperidine group.

Two novel mixed 1D–2D coordination polymers based on 2D [Ln(4,4′-bpdo)2(NO3)2(H2O)2]+n sheets and 1D [Ln2(4,4′-bpdo)2(C4AS)(NO3)(H2O)9]n chains (Ln = Sm for 1 and Ln = Nd for 2) sustained by π⋯π interactions and lattice water facilitated hydrogen bonds have been established.
